While this was very clean, the food itself left a lot to be desired. Wouldn't call it an authentic Mexican restaurant. Oh, they make you pay for your chips and salsa. Yes I know you always "pay" for chips and salsa from the standpoint that nothing is truly free. However, I don't expect a Mexican restaurant to make a deal out of ordering it and adding it to your bill, even though it was only $2

Excellent food and service. Don't be intimidated by the neighborhood. It's cleaning up and we felt safe.

Went there when it wasn't very busy at all. The service was very good the waitress was very attentive. I has the chicken chimichanga. It wasn't the best chimichangas I've had but it wasn't bad. The chips and salsa were very good though. And the fried ice cream was awesome!

They serve good food most the time servers have good attitudes I've been coming here for a couple years. My satisfaction with the dish I get has changed seems like it's more about getting it out then getting the perfect dish to a customer. Which is a shame considering the pricing and the parking area. Luckily they have someone outside sometimes monitoring their parking lot. I love the lady in a taco shell she's a classic

Food was terrible. Carnitas were 1/2 fat. The chicken with cilantro tasted so bad you couldn't swallow the first bite. The only good part was the chips, salsa, and guac. Server was complaining about working. Gave our good to someone else and we had to ask for it. Never came back to full the $3.00 Soda. Really disappointing for a beautiful historic bldg.

Neighborhood is a disaster. The homeless mess is spilling over right to the restaurant's doorstep. It's scary to leave your car parked in the parking lot. Food is good, but prices seem to increase every time I visit. You can get Mexican food that's just as good a few blocks away for less money. The staff tries hard, but I won't be back until the area improves and prices become competitive again.

Learned about this place after the new ownership and decided to give it a try. The place looks really cool for a historical building. They have a lot of the original neon lights from the 1920's. The atmosphere is super fun with the open bar in the center of the restaurant. The margarita was delightful with the spicy salt rim and I ordered the halibut tacos. The only problem with those was I only ordered 2! My daughter says its her new favorite place and asked if we could come here more often. I am happy to oblige.

Been coming here since I was a little kid. It's a unique restaurant, but I love it. Not the greatest location, but once inside, it has great charm. I've been getting the same dish for 20 years and I hope I'm able for another 20.

Mexican food done right. The historic family owned and operated Rio Grande Cafe has been a staple of downtown SLC for decades, offering up excellent mexican cuisine at an affordable price. From the massive Nachos to my personal favorite, The Flauta Grande, you'll be able to find anything you're looking for this side of the border. Don't forget to try a Margarita! You won't regret it!

Home of the purple lady. One of my very favorite spots to eat in Salt Lake! Great recipes, quick seating, nostalgic atmosphere and feel, jukebox, and great service! The city is working on cleaning up the neighborhood - there's nothing to worry about.

Back in the 80's I ate here frequently. It seemed to be higher than average price. Just last Friday 05/06/16 I returned, the prices seem to be right in line with other restaurants now. The food was excellent, I enjoyed the shredded beef chimichanga. Our server (Allison) was very attentive and her timing was spot on.
We were witness to a loud patron, with a foul mouth, sitting next to us. I was very impressed with how the Server Keri, handled the situation. There was not a discussion, she brought him his bill, and his food to go like there was not a choice, he left without further incident.
I will be back, this is good food, good atmosphere, and good entertainment. I only wish I hadn't gone the last 20 years without The Rio Grande Cafe.
