wendyEllen spent most of her life dancing! Trained in Ballet, Modern, African and other world forms she holds a Bachelors and Masters in Modern Dance and Theatre. While working on her undergrad she was also pre-med. Accepted to the Columbia School of Midwifery for her Masters, she chose a Teaching Fellowship in Dance and Theatre at the University of Michigan instead!
On the very day she completed her MFA in Dance/Theatre, she became pregnant with her first child and moved to San Diego to join her US Navy husband on a grand new life journey. She researched birth, reading Ina May Gaskins, “Spiritual Midwifery,” and “The Immaculate Deception.” This was 1979 and there were no resources for Navy wives to consider home births or birth centers, so with the help of a Lamaze class, she committed herself to a natural childbirth and delivered at Balboa Navy Hospital. This was a Pitocin laden, fast birth. The hospital was very busy and not willing to wait out broken waters with no labor.
Over the years wendyEllen self-trained as a Doula and attended over 22 births of friends, family members, students and colleagues. With her knowledge of dance, movement and her instinctual sense of what positions were needed; all but one of her Moms delivered naturally and under 12 hours of labor! She was able to deliver her second child at a birthing room at Paradise Valley Hospital with no interventions!

In 2013, after a long and illustrious career in teaching dance both at university level and K-12, wendyEllen retired and decided to certify with DONA International and become an “official” birth doula. She volunteered at San Diego’s Best Start Birth Center and UCSD’s Hearts to Hands program and quickly gathered 8 births under her belt since the summer of 2014. She was able to attend two water births, two natural hospital childbirths and four Moms with epidurals, medication and one C-section.

Currently wendyEllen is building her Birth Doula business. With her wide range of birth experiences she is willing and able to assist Moms with the birth that they envision. Comfortable at home, birthing centers or hospitals, she will serve her Moms with positive energy, comfort, compassion, encouragement and kindness. These are words shared with her by recent Mom’s when asked to describe their experience with wendyEllen as their doula! She would like to take more time with her Moms to help guide them with movements and non-medical measures to ensure a healthy and smooth birth. To this end, she does not want to take on too many monthly clients so she is available to her Moms prior to and during their births.Highly skilled and trained in Ancient Belly Dance and Yoga, she loves to use these movements before, during and after birth to assist Moms with getting comfortable with their bodies and birthing! Since she is totally devoted solely to her doula business and has grown children who live on their own, she is available and willing to travel all over the Bay Area. wendyEllen breast fed both her children and is happy to support Mom’s in their breastfeeding efforts.
