A favorite park for many. Trails for various levels of fitness. Beautiful views. Clean bathrooms. Be sure to go right, down the hill after you view the overlook in the parking lot. The views are amazing and you can sit right along the edge of the mountain.

This is park is amazing! It is easily accessible & has many beautiful trails. I highly recommend driving up for a sunset. During the last 30-45 minutes of sunlight, the colors change so much that you feel like you are taking pictures of a different scene, every few minutes. Enjoy the pictures and this breathtaking treasure!

Pilot mountain - exposed 360° views of the surrounding area, very easily accessed rock climbing with a good mix of trad/sport/top roping. Most routes can be top roped. Expect the limited sport routes to get crowded. Very fun, also good hiking for the less vertically inclined.

A great escape for those in the Triad! Located about 30 minutes NW of Winston Salem, Pilot Mountain is a great park. The mountain itself rises quite suddenly from the surrounding countryside, and its unique shape is one of the natural highlights of NC. The views at the summit are spectacular! You actually can't get to the absolute top of the Big Pinnacle as it's federally protected, but the Jomeokee Trail around the base of it is great. There are some areas for rock climbing, and a couple of trails up and around the mountain. Wonderful park!

This is one of the nicest places to hike in the area. There is a trail around the base of the mountain about 5 miles. Another trail to the top. Or you can drive up to the top and hike the knob. Great views up there across the surrounding areas. A great place to picnic not far from the parking lot.

I've lived in this area all my life and, never gave Pilot Mountain much thought. Loving the outdoors and our awesome national parks I can't believe I've let this one go so long without visiting it. It's a beautiful place for anyone to enjoy!

There are a variety of trails for different abilities. There are nice picnic areas at the summit and decent restroom. Great views from the summit and nice trails through the woods. On holidays and nice weekends, parking can be challenging.
Check the park web site for warnings about occasional controlled burns in the area. The park rangers are friendly and helpful.
There are periodic controlled burns on the mountain that may affect views and air quality. Check their web site or call visitor center to learn about possible burns. I've been there twice in a year to find obscured view and had breathing problems from smoke.

Some of the camp sites are very rocky. Be careful what you pick, if you're a senior citizen. Better off picking inside the loop. Very nice, we'll marked trails. Fantastic mountain top view. Nice bathhouse facilities.

We stopped in on our way to Mt. Airy just to see what the park was like (based on a recommendation of a friend). We drove up the winding road (and I do mean winding - all the way up!) to the summit overlook. The view was incredible! You could see for miles! From the overlook there was access to a few trails.
The campground is beautiful but the campsites are a smaller footprint with a concrete pad for your tent or camper and a grill (low to the ground). There are wash houses with hot showers and toilets.
No cabins in the park from what we could see. We stopped in at the park office but staff were out in the park. Maps of the park were available in the vestibule.
Hiking trails range from under a mile to around 7 miles. Difficulty ranges from easy to strenuous.
We will definitely return to hike this park!response / report this review -

You're paying for the view. Actually it's free, but it is all about the views. The park is somewhat small, there are a couple of short hiking trails, bathrooms are clean and well maintained. However, the views from the approximately one mile trail around the Pinnacle are spectacular. There are also several overlooks. We've been here a couple of times, during fall when the leaves are turning is probably the best.

Great hiking trails and lovely views. A bit overshadowed by Hanging Rock, but arguably a better destination for climbers. For less advanced or active visitors, the fact that there is a road leading to the summit is great.

Great park but fills up fast. I got here early and there was a line of cars waiting to get in when I left and they were turning cars away at the gates. Trails are in really good shape. Not a great spot for solitude but great views.

Aside from being exceptionally busy this park is fantastic. It has sparse accommodations, and isn't exactly a big park, but it has well maintained trails, good maps, and reasonable hours (i only wish there were extended hours at the top for stargazing). If you're looking to get away from all the people I recommend the mountain trail, as it is the most sparsely used trail, although it doesn't have great views or anything it's a nice little trail and a moderate length (at 4.5 miles). I recommend this park.

I can't say how many times we have taken out-of-town visitors to Pilot Mountain. It has such a variety of skills for it's visitors that anyone can enjoy a visit. There is the main overlook just beyond the parking lot that is extremely easy to access, the trail around the knob is moderate, and there is also a rather difficult trail as well. Plus, since Pilot Mountain one of the only mountains in the immediate vicinity, the views are all unobstructed.

I've been here 3 times. The trail to the large pinnacle is well worth it. Jomeokee Trail is marked moderate and I'd say just about anybody could manage although there are a few stairs. I hiked up to the lookout while inside a rain cloud. The large pinnacle wasn't visible until the cloud passed through and the large pinnacle quickly revealed itself. Possibly one of the best experiences I've had!
