I think Picacho Peak was very cool. They have several trails but I decided to go for it and climes Hunters Trail. I am out of shape but I made it to the top. All the recommended items for this trail are NECESSARY!! Gloves, boots, water, Sun screen and PROTEIN ! It’s only 2 miles up but it treacherous. You will be using upper and lower body strength. You will be climbing up hill and have to pull yourself up. Making it to the top is all worth it. The feeling of accomplishment is truly worth it.
If you’re like me, you’ll be to tired to climb your way back up the saddle so we took an adjacent trail SUNSET, which takes you down the back side of the mountain and a completely around to the RV camp. It takes longer but it’s less straining. It’s also very scenic and we had the opportunity to watch the sunset. Not sure if I’d ever do this again but I’m proud I did.
Unbelievable flowers, cactus of all kinds, wild horses, etc. Fantastic place to hike with easy to hard trails. The cable swings on top are so much fun!
Go right now! :)
Best time to visit in during winter, it can get too hot in the summer. Entrance fee is less than $10. They have trails to hike in. They do have secured entry at the main entrance. Campsites and shared restrooms are available on site.
Great state park to go on a hike and also admire the wildflowers during their season. To enter, we had to pay $7 for the car. It was quite busy, however when you get inside, you can’t see that many people as it’s a pretty big park. Pets are welcome also. This is a beautiful getaway in the nature with a nice view if you climb up.
Picacho Peak State Park, Arizona, was my 1st hiking peak of the 2023 New Year!!!
I hiked this peak on 1/3/ 2023.
Most of the trail was shaded and very pleasant. It was easy to follow, with a very pretty view of both cities of Phoenix and Tucson. There was even a super fun and a lot of friendly hikers to add to the ambiance. While the cable ascends and descends were super challenging. The trail was 3.2 miles out&back, and about 2,200 ft of elevation gain.
It is a steep climb, so you'll need good hiking shoes [and gloves are highly recommended especiallyat for the cables]. Don't forget to bring enough water and snacks to make sure you are able to enjoy the incredible views at the peak!
