Stumbled across this nice melody and chords
I first started learning this ragtime piece when I was the piano player in the dance classes at Stockton College. From a technical perspective, this piece forces you to be able to play complicated right hand parts without concentrating on your right hand; to put it on "auto-pilot" , so to speak. I have found this principal to be at the foundation of what it means to develop "hand independence". From a theoretical perspective, this piece stretches normal diatonic harmony with secondary dominants. I hope to develop the ability to implement both of these concepts during improvisation, which is why I learned this piece.
I love to teach kids to improvise and write music as early as possible. Here is a song called "Everything is Cool" from my lesson with an 8 year old the other day. We went back and forth improvising lyrics about things that are cool while she played the chords.
One of my favorite things to work on with my students is composition, and arranging. I recently had the pleasure of arranging and performing a whole set of Beatles songs for my trio, Deep Creature. The rabbit hole of "How many different chords could fit this melody note?" and "How many different ways can I play this part?" is nearly endless.
