Description

Oku is the Japanese word for Oak and besides being the national tree of the United States, it has a symbolic meaning for the members of Oku Education. Oaks are one of the few trees that can be found in every corner of the contiguous U.S. which is because the 90 or so species that have evolved over time are what botanists refer to as hardy. This means they are able to withstand and thrive in both extreme cold temperatures and extreme hot and either dry or wet temperatures.

What might this have anything to do with education, one might ask? Well, a lot, actually.

Our concept is created with the overarching idea that the psychological concept of hardiness is what leads to the overall success of individuals in their ability to persist toward academic success and achievement.

Simply put, Oak (or Oku to reflect the diversity of our community) represents the goal of our program to engage, empower, and ultimately educate students such that they develop the hardiness necessary to be resilient and thrive in the face of the many natural occurring stresses and ultimately achieve goals that are in line with the goals of our civil society: to become productive, committed members of a thriving community of learners, doers, thinkers, and feelers.
