On April 13 we have an opportunity to break a trend that has been occurring around the country by joining in National Make Lunch Count Day. DYK that according to a recent study, the majority of U.S. workers eat lunch at their desk at least twice a week (73%), while one-third have lunch at their desk every day of the week. Break the cycle and get away from your desk. Join your co-workers at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center Canteen and enjoy a real lunch with stimulating conversation. #NationalMakeLunchCount

National Thomas Jefferson Day is observed annually on April 13. This day honors the birth of the third President of The United States, Thomas Jefferson, who was born April 13, 1743. Most known as the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson was a stalwart of democracy. While not much an orator, his signature is found on almost every American written piece of correspondence, historical document, journal, and manuscript during the late 1700’s.

Observed each year in the United States on April 12th, National Big Wind Day commemorates the recording of the highest natural wind gust measured on the Earth’s surface. On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded winds at 231 miles per hour. We too, have had our share of big winds in New Mexico over the past few days. #NationalBigWindDay

During the month of April, health care professionals and health promotion experts across the country will join forces to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic. Here are some good ideas on how to reduce stress: Exercise, play soothing music, reduce caffeine intake and spend more time laughing with family and friends.

The Fisher House will be a "home away from home" at no cost for families and caregivers of veterans and active duty military that are recieving care at the NMVAHCS. April 11 is National Pet Day. While loving our pets is something we do every day, National Pet Day encourages us to pay special attention to pets who may not get that extra attention. Helping orphaned pet companions will improve their health and enhance their opportunities for adoption.

On this day in 1942, U.S. surrendered the Bataan Peninsula on the Philippine island of Luzon to Japan during WWII. Approximately 75,000 Filipino and American troops on Bataan were forced to make a 65-mile march to prison camps. Many of the marchers were subjected to harsh punishment along with the intense heat from the sun. Thousands perished in what became known as the Bataan Death March.

National Library Workers Day is observed annually on the Tuesday of National Library Week. This day is designated to honor all library staff and the valuable contributions that they make. Librarians do so much more than house the books we can borrow nearly any time of the day or night. Library workers are also the masters of history and research. They are the champions for our youth and foster creativity amongst all of us. Thank you, librarians for all you do!
