On June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in what is the largest seaborne invasion in history and culminating in a battle that would result in hundreds of thousands of lives lost. The small Virginia town of Bedford suffered an enormous impact—along with the rest of the nation—as they lost more men per capita than any other city in the country. Because of that loss and sacrifice, the National D-Day Memorial resides in Bedford, Virginia where thousands visit each year to commemorate the Valor, Fidelity, and Sacrifice of the men and women who lost so much during World War II.
Each generation of Americans send fewer of their young men and women to protect this country. Less than one percent of the population can claim veteran status. In 2014, in the United States, the total number of veterans was 21.8 million (approximately ten percent of which were women) of a population that exceeds 300 million people.
HONOR & RESPECT TO THE LAST JAMES A. GARFIELD on May 30, 1868: "If silence is ever golden, it must be beside the graves of fifteen-thousand men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem the music of which can never be sung."
Taking care of all 3 properties takes a lot of time and effort. Thank you to our dedicated staff for taking time from their personal lives to help make our funeral homes look beautiful! Wayne and I are grateful for all that you do!!

The entire staff of Murphy Funeral & Cremation Chapels wishes you and your family a year that is filled with love, laughter, brightness and hope. Happy New Year!
You don’t have to have it “together” all the time. Please don’t be so hard on yourself...whether it’s your first Christmas without your loved one or your 15th. Grief is grief. It sneaks in at expected AND unexpected times. Take one moment at a time.
It’s hard to know what to say sometimes...this is good advice. The holidays can be especially hard for those that have lost loved ones. We are thinking of you and your family.
We just wanted to send a friendly reminder that stockings are due today! We thank everyone for their continued support with this program. Your support is greatly appreciated! God Bless!
Some people have been asking for the list to be posted online too. Here’s the Stockings for Soldiers list of Recommended items!
It’s time to start stuffing Stockings for Soldiers again! Last year we were able to send over 300 stockings to our troops overseas. The stockings were sent to 10 different countries including Iran, Afghanistan, Djibouti, & Africa and to local veterans as well. Your generous contributions to this program helped make this possible!
If you’d like to help this year, pick up your stocking today!
