They're ok - they do burn their crust as others have mentioned. I went once, had no desire to go back. I know others who love this place - beauty is in the eye of the beholder... In New Haven, Bar is my go-to place for pizza...
I was told I shouldn't write a review yet because I haven't tried their plain pizza, but I promise I'll update when the time comes. We decided to sit down here on a Sunday night, which was surprisingly crowded but we only had a 5 minute wait (I think they were filming something in the back maybe). After much deliberation I decided to get a mozzarella pizza with mushrooms & garlic, my usual. We also got garlic bread which was good but not great. I was warned before hand that the mushrooms are canned, which I learned contributes to the cheese falling off of the pizza; both of these revelations were disappointing. That said, the pizza was quite good. I'm not a fan of the crunchy-crust New Haven style, but this was good enough for me to look past that.
I haven't tried any of the other well-known places in the area, but I'm definitely up for coming back here in the future. My only complaint was the canned mushrooms, and that 4-star rating up there is really close to a 5. Back to the plain pizza, I'm told they have a pizza with light parmesan cheese instead of mozzarella, and I will definitely be trying that next time. That may bring this up the half star it needs, we'll see.
Good food, but limited choices outside of pizza. Small wine and beer selection. Very popular spot so expect a wait! Good service and good food!
Went on a Saturday night and there was no wait to for a table. Had their famous Italian Bomb which did not disappoint! Definitely a must go if you're in the New Haven area.
I've heard a lot about this New Haven pizza place so finally got in to try. Nothing special about the location or restaurant, a nice place. Service was fast, very good. The cheese pie I ordered was interesting in that the crust seemed to be "dense", not at all light and crispy. Almost pre-made, not hand tossed?
I liked the fact that it was cooked well-done. The cheese and sauce did not stand out as anything amazing, but still good. I did enjoy it overall, but have had better crusts on pies elsewhere - just my opinion.
Decent pizza, though not New Haven's best. Very long wait times, which is to be expected for the more popular locations here, though our wait time was almost 20 minutes longer than we were told. The toppings here were excellent, but the crust was lacking in the flavor of Pepe's.
Some of the best pizza I have ever had. The cheese is salty the way I like it. The crust is the perfect amount of crispy and chewy, not soggy. The perfect amount of char but not burnt.
The greeting from when you walk in to being seated made the environment comfortable. The staff is amazing quick with service and anything you need. Even when you recieve your order they come ask hiw was everything. The hospitality is very attracting i will be back soon guys keep up the great work. O yeah and the food is A+
Been enjoying this pizza for over 50 years. Always great. I live in NJ family still in New Haven. Nowhere comes close. I usually stop in whenever I come to visit 5 stars
Caesar salad was surprisingly considered tasty by all-- even the non-salad eaters; that's why I'll give an extra star. (However, it's worth noting that it's doused in dressing so consider ordering on the side.) We were unimpressed with the pizzas.
The clam was good with the lemon juice, but didn't really mix with the pizza slice it was on; they felt very disparate and likely would have each been enhanced if eaten separately. The clams casino was overwhelmed by the bacon and peppers and it was difficult to pick up any other flavors. I didn't try the Italian bomb, but the person who ordered it said "it was fine."
The pizza itself was too thin, so it came out too hot and practically fell apart when picked up. The structural integrity improved when it was eaten cold the next morning, though.
Overall, I'm not sure why people talk this place up. I think store bought ingredients/premade pizzas thrown together at home would be vastly superior and less expensive.
Over rated! Used to be better back in the day. Also, the service isn't great as usual. I've had better pizza elsewhere no doubt
Best pizza joint in new haven. They always have great service and actually answer the phone when you try to call in an order. Longest wait has been 30 min.
It's not just the pizza that's great! The chicken parm was delicious, especially the sauce. The bread to mop up the sauce was great. Even the salad was delicious. It's hard to say whether this is better than Pepe's, because the styles are different. Modern has a broader menu, so there are other things to order besides pizza.
This is by far, my favorite place for apizza. The sauce is perfect, the amount of mozzarella is perfect and the crust is tasty. I never get additional toppings because it is perfect just the way it is. The staff is friendly and efficient. They never get flustered even when the place is full of customers.
I've always rolled my eyes at folks who say Connecticut/NY pizza is the best. I've been all over (including Italy) so I found that hard to believe. This place, however, more than lives up to its reputation. I was told this is one of America's top pizzerias. It is, hands down. Everything about it is incredible, from the crust to the sauce to the grease on the cheese. Flavor permeates everything. Nothing is excessive or overwhelming however. The sauce is not too robust, the spices suggest flavour rather than sitting in the foreground, and the crust is more than just a holder for cheese and sauce. If you're near here, it would be a crime not to go.
