Feelings of historic captivity abound when present at the Liberty Jail. Man chooses to give way to despair. God encourages us to endure it well.

Cool historical site with information about Liberty Jail and how it influenced early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hard to conceptualize the building that is restored within another building. Fun for small kids.

Due to the Covid19, this facility is closed for in person visits. Virtual tours are available. The number is located in the attached picture. You could call this facility a historic part of Mormon history. Mormon is a nickname, but not the name of the church. The actual name of the church is " The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". This jail is where the 1st prophet of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" was imprisoned for almost 6 months. Great free attraction for local history. To have guides that share history of religious leaders. They aren't pushy though. They won't push their religion on you. They have a neat display that shows a life size jail looked like back in the 1800's. It's kinda sad but has a cool message at the end. We left feeling peace.

Just a fantastic experience. They were very knowledgable and kind. The tour was interesting and heartfelt for sure. I would recommend it and like to visit there again.

Very cool. Great to learn about the history in Liberty area. The walls are about 4 feet thick. Entrance to the jail was through a hole in the ceiling. If jails were like this today, I think we'd have a lot less crime. No one would want to be in a place like this. Another interesting thing is that this jail was abandoned after years of wearing down and was converted to an ice house for a few years and then a home was built over it, keeping the original floor of the jail. This helped preserve the floor.

Well preserved and restored site where the Prophet Joseph Smith was imprisoned for four months in the winter of 1837 to 1838. Three sections of D & C were received here. No heat and mostly candle light in this dungeon like prison.

This gave me a lot to think about. I loved visiting a place that is so historically significant to my faith. It made the commitment of the early Saints more obvious to me, and the Sister missionaries taught me some facts I didn’t know.

A sacred place for those that believe. Read the related material in the Church History in the Fulness of Times institute student manual from the Gospel Library App. The more prepared you are, the better experience you'll have.

It's a cool site, they built a building around the jail and the missionaries give you a nice tour and lots of good background history about the church in that time period. Don't expect it to be the fastest tour . We were there almost an hour. But the spirit is there! Glad we went.
