  #FortClark is a North Dakota State Historical Site located approximately 15 miles (15 minute drive) west of our location. The fort was named after William Clark and has a rich history of fur trade and the Mandan, Hidatsa and later the Arikara tribes that inhabited the nearby earthlodge villages. The site is a free, self-guided walking tour with interpretive panels to read. We recommend taking a few minutes to stop at the site to learn more. Also, nearby, just another 7 o...r 8 miles further west is #KnifeRiverIndianVillage, a National Historic Site. This was the village of Sacagawea and has a reconstruced, fully furnished earthlodge. This site is also free to visit.

  The Interpretive Center will be closed Saturday, March 30, for staff training. We will reopen on Monday, April 1, and will begin offering tours of Fort Mandan originating from the Interpretive Center. We're excited to see you this season!

  Construction of the dugout canoes started on Feb. 28. On March 19 Ordway writes: Sergt. Gass returned to the fort and informed us that the perogues were finished. It took just 19 days to make 6 cottonwood canoes. . .... . #dugoutcanoe #canoe #cottonwood #lewisandclark #fortmandan

  Our Fort Mandan replica is currently still closed, however, we are working hard at clearing snow, furnishing rooms and getting the visitor center ready for our April 1st opening. We look forward to our 2019 visitors!

  Who was Sacagawea? Much has been said about her & many artists have tried to capture her essence. As the only woman to accompany #lewisandclark from the Mandan villages to the Pacific & back, her story is from a different perspective. However it is one we don’t know since she never wrote or had her account recordered.
