They euthanize and do not save dogs that need it the most. I was told by the staff when I called that, they think it is better to kill the dog than let them be in a kennel for years. I am from the northeast. I was horrified and so sad to hear someone speak like this. The no kill movement exists for a reason. Dogs who have been abused need love, attention, healing, recovery. Not to be killed. They survived their abuse. Because they WANTED TO LIVE. They deserve respect for what they have been through. What this staff person said to me was so distressing, I am unsure how to address it. She also believed all aggression is the same. I asked about dogs with fear aggression, who only act out if they feel threatened, and whom otherwise are fine around other dogs. Her response was they 'don't let any aggressive dogs live'. That they 'can't let dogs 'get lose and run down the street and kill other dogs'. What is this? This left me speechless. A dog who has been attacked, whom is scared or nervous around certain breeds, is NOT THE SAME AS A DOG THAT HAS PREDATORY BEHAVIOR TOWARDS OTHER DOGS!!!! What is going on?! There is a very broad spectrum of behavior with dogs, just like with people! She knew nothing, and is dangerously ignorant, and no one should bring a dog here if they think the dog may ever act out at another dog, or person.
When I did a search for dog rescues in the state, hardly anything came up! This is devastating. There are more dog rescues in the state of CT than KS - KS is more than fourteen times the size of CT! You cannot take the life of another being and say you are addressing animal cruelty. THAT IS NOT THE SOLUTION.

I adopted a little pug mix from here about two months ago. I had asked if she was dog friendly because many of my friends and family have dogs. I also asked if she had shown any signs of separation anxiety, especially in a kennel. The staff said that she enjoys other dogs and showed no signs of separation anxiety.

Well, I have only found one other dog that she gets along with. It's difficult to take her to any one of my friend's houses because she is so picky about what dogs she likes. I've tried altered and unaltered dogs, young and old dogs, small and big dogs and she so far only gets along with a female small toy poodle. She also does have separation anxiety in a kennel. She tried to chew her way out of a metal crate and screams and cries the whole time I'm gone. I called the shelter to ask for help and the behavioral team mentioned a note from the foster home she was with while she had puppies saying she did not do well in the crate. She would cry and try to bite her way out. Not sure if the adoption person I talked to the day I got her didn't know much about her or if they were purposefully withholding information so I would adopt her.

She otherwise is an amazing little pup and is a little celebrity where I work and live.

I "rescued" a cat from here and couldn't be happier. This is a great location and the fact that they encourage people to come see the animals is really impressive! The place is the cleanest HS I've ever been to, and their prices are second to none. You can peruse the animals for adoption in their constantly updated website, and the animals who need special care are given a little blurb on their website page detailing their needs to help better place them with loving and informed families. They neuter, spay, deworm, and chip the animals that come in and with adoption comes a free checkup within 30 days of adoption! I love it here. This is completely the place for your new furry bibi!

We got our cat Fish here. She is a great hunter yet very gentle with our children. The people here helped feel welcomed and took the time out to find a cat that would so well in our house. They were very knowledgeable about her and could answer most of our questions on her. But they also asked us questions to make sure we were a good fit for her too and I liked that. Although they never called to check in on her like I thought they would have.

The people who operate this business really are the best in what they do . They were the most helpful for me and my family when getting to Lawrence and needing to bring my pets up on there vaccinations they took the greatest care in what they do and went far above what was asked of them ,they legitimately care about animals and how they are taken care of. One of my pets didn't have a micro chip and they gave him one for free. Thank God for the Lawrence Humane Society because without them i would have been helpless without there wonderful care. Thanks to all the caring techs and helpers in this business I would refer it to everyone I would ever meet and know!

I gotten a very small kitten and his health was failing..I just went the humane society because it was close.. They acted quickly to save my kitten and get him strong enough to be with me..They really cared about his well bein.And made me feel better..Awesome Resource! This service is so vital

In the past 2 months I've gotten 2 kittens and 1 dog. The people there are all nice. Online pictures aren't very appealing and don't rank as well to other kansas humane societies. After the initial inventory photo they should get a glamour shot. Also the kitties need a space more quiet, away from the dogs which they should have soon. Here is the glamour shot of the 2 I got from there.

Excellent facility they have multiple pins for dogs to play with visitors and get plenty of exercise outside with grass instead of concrete like most places have.

Best dogs ever. We've adopted two dogs from Lawrence, and both have been the healthiest, best dogs ever. One is now 12 and the other is 16! Both are large dogs and came to us healthy and loved. When our two loves pass, we will definitely return. The shelter went above and beyond to make our two girls' stay there healthy and happy.
