What is a “Cat Tree” and why is it called that?
Outside cats find security (safety) and adventure climbing trees. They can lay on a tree limb and see everything around them, survey their domain. They can climb a tree to escape most predators, dogs, in particular. They can chase another cat or be chased, during play, up and down a tree. They LOVE trees! Indoor cats need their own safety, security and adventurous play. Some ingenious soul saw the need and built the first indoor tree for their cat(s). Like the mouse trap, people have been redesigning, reshaping……… improving the “Cat Tree”. Cats love it!
They can run up to the highest point and sneer at the dog who chased them. They can chase their house mates up, down and around the “Cat Tree”. Why wouldn’t they love it?
And, bless us all, we have done everything to make it fun, safe and, above all, comfortable for them. We provide them with soft landing spots, with added pillows. We can even put a heated pad to sooth their aging joints.
Then, of course, it is important that it look good in our home. So, we pick colors pleasing to us or have it custom designed to match the room. We want them to be happy but we want to be pleased when looking at it. They really don’t care what color it is, only that it is as high as we can allow.
The “A” personality cat insists on having the highest perch on the “Cat Tree”, even to the point of rousting some interloper from the coveted spot. Others are just happy to have a spot on one of the perches, from which to watch everything around them or to rest undisturbed.
An important consideration for a “Cat Tree” is where to locate it. If you could ask the cats, they would request a window view. This gives them the illusion they are not captives, in their home. They can watch neighbors moving about, cars passing by, even an occasional neighborhood dog or cat but also, birds winging their way through the cat’s viewing area. Oh what fun! Don’t leave the window open!
So, that’s a “Cat Tree” and why it is called that. Cats need them and love them.
