This is a great location for a kayak rental business. The kayaks provided and the time period were adequate for paddling by the nearby park, circling the very scenic Gibraltar Island, and exploring the Put-in-Bay. It was a good time to people watch among the moored boats in the bay, as well as check out the Jet Express ferry boat taking off and a large Coast Guard ship that happened to be docked that day.
The rental kayaks all appeared to be sit-on-top style with bottom scupper holes open. They are adequately stable craft and will naturally drain water, but the drawback is that there is always some amount of water at your feet and in your seat. This is quite common for rental kayaks on open water like this, but just be prepared with a bathing suit or change of shorts. The nearby park provides restrooms for changing. Also, they sell camera and cell phone sealed cover bags, which are highly recommended since pants pockets will get wet. You might be comfortable using a doubled-up plastic Ziploc bag and possibly take an older digital camera with wrist strap. There is always the possibility a wave surprises you and lose grip of the camera.
In any case, a great place for kayaking, though my only tweak would be the pricing and kayak inflexibility. Now, a flat rate for 2 hours probably covers a large majority of people, so it does make sense to only offer that. Two hours was a good amount of time to see the bay, and it is called "Kayak the Bay". That being said, I was somewhat hoping to see a selection of sea kayaks and extended hourly rates that could allow a hop over to Middle Bass Island for more experienced kayakers. Then again, this would probably increase the risk the business would have to take on.
Overall pretty good kayaking trip.
Worth the money. Its $25 per person for 2 hours. They are close sometimes but better to call in advance.
I work on the island and our organization was doing an employee party. not only did my paddle snap half way through our kayaking journey but I was chastised and told we would be charged for it upon returning back I was on the rowing team in collegecheap padles bad customer service..go to the state park instead
I love it here. The owner is so friendly and the staff were always nice to me. I went for my grad party last year and went back a few times. I would totally recommend.
We really enjoyed kayaking. The gentleman working in the morning suggested we kayak to middle bass island, eat lunch at the pool bar, and then kayak back. He told us it was no big deal if we took 3 hours to get back. However when we returned the female employee charged us extra for being late even though we were told we could be. The gentleman was still there and didn't step in. We really enjoyed kayaking and even enjoyed the pool bar but we sure didn't love the extra $25/kayak! It cost us an additional $150. Make sure when he says u can stay out late you get it in writing!
Took the family and we had a blast. We had a double and two singles. The guy was super helpful and suggested a route. We can't wait to go back and do it again.
I came up on the 4th. of July this year (2014) for the sole purpose of hitting the water in a kayak. Been planning it since last year!
All I can say is Thank you!
By offering your service you made my trip very enjoyable. I just wish I had more time to explore.
I absolutely had a wonderful time kayaking the bay. The rep was so nice and caring. I would definitely go back and would recommend kayaking to everyone! Great work out to burn the calories before all the drinking too :-)
TERRIBLE customer service. While I was rowing, my paddle just broke in two randomly during a normal stroke. They charged me an extra $50 to replace it. Dozens of people had used that same paddle before it broke, and it lands on me to pay for it? They need to either invest in better paddles or increase their prices a dollar so that everyone can pay for it rather than just the person who happens to break it. Terrible, terrible customer service.
We had a great time kayaking during our stay at Put in Bay. We elected to take a long tour of the island, and paddled until we couldn't paddle any more - about 4 hours. Vikki was very personable and was able to tell us how long it would take to get where we wanted to go. Prices are fair and we would go again.
