Very good food, you can tell everything is made in house. Thursday's is half off all bottles of wine! Only down fall is the slow, but friendly, service

John's Cafe is truly phenomenal. Service is stellar, and the food(!) Where do I start? I've been many, many places but the black sea bass I had there tonight is world class. Might be the best I've ever had do yourself a favor, and go to this place!!!

    Tasteless food
Was finally able to come to this place after hearing mixed reviews and got to experience the worst Shrimp Fradiavolo over pasta I ever had.
Shrimps were pan fried and placed over the pasta over a pool of insipid red sauce; seafood is suppose to be cooked with the sauce not added as a garnish; the tomatoes sauce seems to be a generic one they use on every dish that needs it.
The sausage and tomato sauce over pasta my lunch companion had was badly lacking in flavor as well; sausages pieces were just a soft mass of some sort of meat by product.

I find it hard to believe anyone has ever had a bad meal in this restaurant. I have been eating here every few months for at least 15 years as have my parents and many friends -- the food is consistently excellent and the wine list is noteworthy in terms of by the glass selections! Don't let the simple name or the unpretentious outside fool you -- you might bump into a celebrity here at lunch at any time as this in the heart of "antiquing" territory and there are several entertainment folks who live nearby in Litchfield county. The restaurant is very small and casual, but high end in terms of its food and wines. The dishes are creative and consistently well done -- this is the type of place where you are never afraid to try something new or eclectic from the specials as the chef is top notch. John's Cafe is a little known gem with a consistent reputation and regular customers from all over the area.

The food was excellent and in decent portions. The side dishes are unique and flavorful, especially the corn one. The prix fix menu is really a good deal and delicious (either the cavatelli or shrimp risotto) and the blueberry maple bread pudding outstanding. The waitress we got was clueless and apparently hasn't worked in this business before. The food was worth overlooking the inept server, and was an excellent value. Highly recommended.
