Fantastic beach! Trail 9 is my personal favorite but in all honesty there isn't a bad trail in the whole park. If you like camping then this is your place for NWI. RVs are welcome. They have clean changing rooms and bathrooms. Be ready for an incredible time.

One of Indiana's best kept secrets! Miles of untouched shoreline you can enjoy for free as well as Dunes State Park which offers a beach, lifeguards, showers, picnic area, camping, hiking trails and so much more! Several restroom and picnic areas all along the shoreline and all are well kept and clean. The dunes themselves are magnificent! The sand is soft as baby powder! When you just need to get away from it all, this is THE place to go.

Beaches, bikes, hikes, and birds. That's pretty much what the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore offers. Fifteen miles of beach. The Calumet Bike Trail plus lots of small roads for biking. Fifty miles of walking trails. An amazingly varied landscape of sandy beaches and expansive lake; both stable and unstable (moving) sand dunes; wetlands and marshes with many species of birds, waterfowl, and flowering plants in any season; and an amazing floating bog.
Most folks never get beyond the beaches--which are lovely--but there's twenty-five square miles to the park. Plus residential beach communities to explore, one of which has five incredible houses from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. The Chicago skyline and the steel mills and power plant in the distance mean you can never quite forget that you are near a great city, but watching the egrets in the marsh, or climbing a dune comes darn close.
If you live anywhere near northwest Indiana and Chicago, this place is worth several visits to explore the whole thing.response / report this review -

Beautiful park on the lake. It's good if you can go midweek or on off weekends. It will be a peaceful wonderful experience then. You can enjoy the dunes, trails and expansive beaches.
If you make the mistake of going on, let's say, Labor Day weekend prepare to be elbow to elbow with greater Chicago. It was a madhouse Add that to the "never again" list.response / report this review -

This was a nice beach to take kids to. Changing rooms and rinse showers we're in good shape. Bathrooms we're pretty good too. We went early and it wasn't very crowded. It was good for speaking and in able drop water. Swimming isn't a good idea when the water is rough.
We walked up a dune near the beach and got a great view and some good pics.

It has an awesomely clean beach that extends quite aways. This is a great place to take a planned trip or just a last minute one, since there are food vendors here. Never thought I'd get a taco standing in front of Lake Michigan. Great place to watch the sun go down. On a clear day you can see Chicago.

This is a great park to visit because of the natural landforms on exhibit. The dunes rising from Lake Michigan are very impressive. Hiking through the dunes allows for observing bow forests have grown on the dunes and allows you to see how far inland the dunes extend. This is a great park and I consider it superior to the national park next door. You don't want to miss this attraction.

The trails could be marked better. And there was a chemical spill which prevented swimming in the lake which was unfortunate. There was a ton of people there, and you can see factories in either direction from the beach. But it was still a good Midwest getaway considering its not too far from some major cities.

This National Park offers spectacular views of nature year-round. There are a variety of trails for every type of hiker. This is a ecologically diverse area with trails that feature transitions between several types of ecosystems. As a result, this is a fantastic site for birding. This is also an easy place to bring families or school groups.

The lone National Park close to Chicago, "The Dunes", both the National and adjacent State Park, are true gems of the entire Park system. The Dunes are best enjoyed in Summer when it is warmest to take a swim in Lake Michigan, but the landscape is beautiful anytime of year. There are dozens of trail systems, adding up to dozens of miles of hiking opportunities, in multiple ecosystems. The Dunes is one of the few spots in this part of the Midwest where you can really escape the urban/suburban world and immerse yourself in nature with minimal disturbance by others. Many trails in this area lose their peaceful quality due to heavy use. The Dunes is the exception. The ecosystems of the Dunes are also quite unique. The sand dunes surrounding Lake Michigan are the most visually stunning and unique natural feature if the Midwest.

I love the dunes. It's a nice little hike to get out of the city and breathe a bit. There did seem to be a decent amount of trash near the shore which was disappointing. Definitely need to bring a little bag to help clean up next time. Overall I really enjoyed it.

Such an amazing place. I remember walking with the trails with this beautiful girl I was talking to. We shared our first kiss deep in the trails. I will never forget this moment. If you have an opportunity to come here, do not think twice and go!
