The Howell County Rural Fire Department Auxiliary was formed on September 30, 1993. It was formed by Cora Kimble, John McDowell, and Joe and Gayla Auffert. Gayla was the first President. Members included Mothers of Firefighters, Wives of Firefighters, Girlfriends of Firefighters, as well as people from the community who were willing to support the Fire Department. Fundraisers included bake sales and chili suppers. The money from the fundraising events was used to help buy equipment for the Fire Department.
In 1995, the Auxiliary had grown to a point they elected a President, Vice President, and Secretary. Fundraisers increased to the point the Auxiliary started helping people in the Fire District that had misfortunes of burnouts and other tragedies that affected their lives.
From 1995 to today, the community has become very active in supporting the Auxiliary’s fundraising events. The community’s support has helped to purchase tables and chairs for the classroom, furnish the kitchen, and has helped build a Memorial Garden at Howell County Rural Fire Station #1.
