Great place to consider living at for sure
Great customer service
I recently moved out of Holiday Park Apartments. I really can’t recommend them – while there are some “pros” about the complex, the “cons” definitely outweigh them.
Pros: Nice setting – lots of grass and trees, deer, squirrels, birds. Apartments are well sound-proofed – with the windows closed you don’t hear anything from outside your apartment. Good amount of parking.
Cons: Unattended children playing in the streets. Plastic kid crap visible throughout the complex in common areas. Most important: management is slow to do things FOR you, but quick to do things TO you. (I presented them with a fairly simple issue that took them 8 months to resolve, but they expect to enter apartments for non-emergencies at the drop of a hat.)
Have lived here a little over two years now. It's a little bit expensive but most of the neighbors are very cool, and wave, and are not a problem. We researched what we wanted for many months, and we got it here.
Whenever we needed maintenance, they fixed whatever we needed in a day or two including last year, 2013 Christmas our water heater rusted through, and they replaced it with a brand new one.
There's ample parking with a garage, parking pad, and overflow parking if you have a guest or friends or something. It's only crowded really when it's Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Lots of birds in the back yards where the trees are, especially if you put out a feeder. The views of the surrounding hills driving to the place make it homey, and comfortable. It's relatively quiet, you harldy hear a siren, and never a plane.
The sunsets and sunrises over the hills are very neat, my wife often takes pictures of them, and fog and or clouds, but it's hills, not spectacular mountain ranges.
At night you can see a lot of stars when it is not too hazy. I have taken my telescope out in the yard and looked at Jupiter and Andromeda.
One problem is living here in winter, Holiday park does an excellent job of plowing and salting before people wake up for work, so it's set up, and they don't plow to where you need to shovel out your car, like happens all the time in Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
But, Murrysville takes a little bit to plow and salt Sandune Drive, and so in winter to get up the hill from the Shop N save you have to go north to the Dairy Queen, and come down logan ferry road from the north, unless you have snow tires or chains.
Lots of families have kids they walk them to the bus stop at the end of the street. Everyone is pretty much neighbors saying hi friendly. I got invited over to another veteran's house once, but people just live quietly.
There's nothing like a barbecue or cookout like some places we lived in Ohio had. But that's just how it is.
There are some food places down the hill. Fox's Pizza, Wendys, Shop N Save, Asian Wok, Zaika Indian Restaurant. Other Fast food within about 2 miles. Pizza places and a neat little Yogurt shop. Haircut places. Car repairs that are mostly to very honest.
There are stores along Wm. Penn Highway, with most things. and if not it's about 20 minutes to get to Monroeville.
The local Wal Mart is a little far about 15 miles East along the state route, or you can go to Monroeville. The traffic on 386 Golden mile is a bit of a problem morning and evening, but they are expanding the lanes to make it wider.
Overall, the management is hands off, and let you live quietly, as long as you pay rent. In winter Mgmt puts out a flyer warning of pipes freezing if it gets 0-10 below outside., keep the heat on, but we haven't had any problems.
Lots of room, our place is huge. Decent sized bedrooms, lots of bathrooms, and a decent basement to put stuff in. Closets are bigger than most apartments.
I'd say overall all things considered, we feel very safe, it's walkable (though the hill is a little steep) to the local strip mall shopping center area. You really need a car if you live here, though. Getting to Pittsburgh can be done in 40 minutes but give yourself an hour or longer if you go at rush hour which jams up at and beyond Wilkinsburg going east.
There's a lot of turnover like 2 or three people sharing a place, stay about 6 months, then move. most people are here a year or two, some longer.
Overall, we'd stay here but were approaching retirement and moving overseas to live cheaper, but when I am here it's restful, and I can get some sleep. The city was too noisy, too much crime, to much traffic.
If you can afford it, it's a nice quiet place and out experience was very positive. Just a little tricky in winter. And the 286 Golden Mile Traffic.
Move in: Rented the apartment through Jinny, she kept saying it was ready to move in, but upon move in I found roughly 5 burned out lightbulbs, the dishwasher was not mounted properly, several outlets didn't work, and the ceiling fan in the kitchen didn't work. I had rented the washer and dryer from them which were disgustingly filthy, and didn't function really at all.
Maintenance: I called the manager Tracy, who was very attentive to my needs (and really the only redeeming thing about living here) who offered to have my washer and dryer replace literally the next day, which was great. She sent maintenance up who fixed most of the issues that week (on a Saturday), and I purchased a new washer and dryer on my own. Tracy was always good to work with, and took care of mostly everything I needed.
Pros:
-Good Neighborhood
-Friendly People
-Close to Monroeville and Pittsburgh
-Small backyard and Patio
-Allows Pets
Cons:
-Townhouse was VERY outdated. It felt like I was living in the mid 1980s.
-Very poor insulation, and very drafty, my heating bills were outrageous.
-Appliances are small and inefficient, which results in huge electricity bills.
-Traffic is terrible everywhere, monroeville, delmont, pittsburgh, its really awful.
-HVAC System was poor, my filter was new, but the AC had trouble pushing to upstairs, it was always 10 degrees hotter up there.
-The wrong carpet tack was used, so walking around in socks you would get poked in the foot going up the stairs, or where the carpet was jointed with carpet tack.
I did get 100% of my security deposit back, because i cleaned it before i left, and i'm not a scumbag. I would say I left it cleaner than when I moved in.
All in All, i moved here from Hilton Head South Carolina. My apartments down there were brand new, huge, 2 bed 2 full bath, 16x12 kitchen with bar, Apartment pool, gym, clubhouse, BBQ and Gratto, all secluded in the forest and I was paying the same amount for an outdated townhouse here. Its probably not bad for most, but I really disliked living here.
Holiday Park Apts. does not update their apartments at ALL. The seal on the counters is horrible and ugly. They do not patch previous tenants holes. The baseboards are beat up and have paint on them. They provide you with the cheapest carpeting, peeling paint, and uncleaned apartments. There was rotting food and mold in our dishwasher when we moved in! Some of the doors didn't close. I asked them to fix our toilet and they did a poor job. They didn't remove bee hives, which I requested. They don't care about their tenants! The lawns aren't very nice. And their pricing is way off for what they offer. I would not recommend to a friend. The first time we lived there, we had huge centipedes in our apartment. We gave them another chance and they treated us poorly. Not to mention, I didn't make them repaint or repair anything when I moved in and now they are keeping my security deposit. Nice, huh?
