Description

Harvard College is a unique academic community—a close-knit undergraduate program located within Harvard University.

With world-class faculty, a dedication to affordability, and groundbreaking research opportunities, committed scholars have all the resources they need to fulfill their academic and personal potential.

Teaching and research are intertwined at Harvard College—students contribute to research in labs and libraries and learn from faculty of the highest caliber. The breadth and depth of Harvard’s resources, from library and museum collections to engagement in the arts and athletics, remain unparalleled in higher education.

At the heart of Harvard College are the Harvard Houses, where three-fourths of students live, learn, and work together with faculty, students, and graduate students. These multigenerational communities provide personal and enriching interactions that shape students both intellectually and socially, while providing a supportive and manageably-sized home inside a larger College and University.

With a 375-year tradition of educating leaders in every endeavor, Harvard College is proud to deliver an education focused on both knowing and doing, on individual achievement and on meaningful collaboration in a supportive environment that fosters intellectual risk-taking.

Situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard is one of more than 50 local institutions serving more than 200,000 students—making the Boston area America’s premier “college town.” Yet with an intellectually stimulating environment that is steeped in tradition, Harvard is unlike anywhere else in the world.

“I’m from a really rural town, so the focus was essentially just getting kids to graduate and getting into college. The Ivy League wasn’t necessarily something on a lot of people’s radars. So when I did get in and I did decide to go to school here I was like ‘man, how am I supposed to keep up with all the work? All the kids there are going to be so brilliant and geniuses,' but I really have found such a great community here that I find back home in Hawaii too." - Yuki, Class of 2020

--- ⠀ In this series, Yuki and other students share their journeys to Harvard, the reservations they had about attending school so far away, and what makes Harvard feel like home.

Another concern... was the weather. I grew up in Hawaii. I grew up on a ship in the Caribbean essentially, so I never really lived somewhere that was quite as cold, but it’s been really fun! There are snowball fights out in the Yard and a lot of opportunities to go sledding down Widener steps, which has been really fun and something I would have never gotten to do had I gone to school back home.” – Yuki, Class of 2020 ⠀ --- ⠀ In this series, Yuki and other students will share their journeys to Harvard, the reservations they had about attending school so far away, and what makes Harvard feel like home. It’s cool to experience a place you’ve never been. I’ll probably never be in the north again after these four years, so it’s nice to be here and experience it, and figure out what all the hype is about. I’ve been to New York a couple times. I never thought I’d go to New York City. I live in Boston, which is just ins...ane. I’ve been to the World Series parade, I’ve been to several Red Sox games – I’ve been to a Red Sox-Yankees game. I’ve been to a Patriots game. None of this stuff I thought I was ever going to do in my entire life. I’ve got to experience Harvard, I’ve got to experience New England fall, I’ve got to eat clam chowder and ride a subway.” – Cade, Class of 2020 ⠀ --- ⠀ In this series, Cade and other students will share their journeys to Harvard, the reservations they had about attending school so far away, and what makes Harvard feel like home. “I can easily call Harvard a second home, even after one semester. I love the place, the classes, the activities, Annenberg and everything in between, but what truly makes Harvard home is the people. I have met some of the most incredible people from all around the U.S. and the globe that truly make my time worthwhile. I have friends who I can simultaneously joke with, study with, and have deep and meaningful conversations with and at the end that is exactly what makes a home... a home.

Your Harvard experience is what you make of it and what you want to make out of it. You can always find what you’re looking for and your place at Harvard even if it is thousands of miles away from home. Definitely do not let distance stop you from applying to Harvard because, as important as location is, you can always find, or even create, a home away from home.” - Nadine, Class of 2022

“Before applying, my biggest concern, as a potential out-of-state student, was paying for college. However, my mom and I did some research and discovered that Harvard is very affordable for out-of-state and international applicants. After seeing that 90% of American families would pay the same or less at Harvard compared to in-state schools, my family encouraged me to apply.

When I was applying to Harvard, I struggled with the idea that I had to let go of my hometown. I didn'...t think my small southern town background would offer much to Harvard's community given how limited my experiences back home had been. Once I got to Harvard, it took me time, but I eventually rediscovered the value of my hometown, and I realized that there was never a need for a choice. As long as you make room for both, your hometown and Harvard can definitely coexist in your heart.” - Gabriel, Class of 2021

“I had never been away from home until I left to come to Harvard. Leaving home in Texas was a very scary thought because I didn’t know what I was getting myself into and I knew it was going to be a completely new place and there were a lot of things I was going to have to learn. The fact that I knew Harvard was going to offer me so much made me feel like it was going to be worth it, and even though I was embarking on this by myself, I knew I was doing it for a very important ...reason. In the end, I knew coming to Harvard would help me grow, learn and improve as an individual.

When I come to school, my mom gives me packs of frozen food to keep in my freezer and heat up whenever I’m feeling homesick. I’ve also found a lot of support through the Latinx community at Harvard. Even though we don’t come from the same regions or the same cultures, there’s a shared experience and we bond through music. Music is huge for me. I like to listen to music that would be on the radio back home, because it makes me feel like I’m in the car, driving around with my family. Food and music are the two big things that automatically remind me of home, no matter where I am.” - Aranza, Class of 2020

“One of the toughest questions for me to answer is 'where are you from?' My dad is from Germany and Poland, and my mom is from Slovenia, but growing up I’ve lived in a number of different countries, including Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, the Dominican Republic, and now Austria. My home is wherever I’m headed next, and for the next three and a half years, home is Harvard.

Everyone on my floor in my dorm (Stoughton North) knows each other really well. Our doors are always open. After ...coming home from classes, I know everyday I can go to the fourth floor of Stoughton and my friends will be there. I’ve also formed a really strong community with a number of other international first-year students. This close group of friends has played a huge role in making Harvard feel like home.” - Robert, Class of 2022 ⠀ --- ⠀ In our next series, Robert and other students will share their journeys to Harvard, the reservations they had about attending school so far away, and what makes Harvard feel like home.
