By far my favorite beach in the area. Always less busy than the others and the trails are nice for an easy hike.

be warned: there are NO clear trails or trail markers here.
Novice hikers should STAY AWAY.
No cell reception!
NOT a good place for a picnic or for those with disabilities.
It's essentially a maze of random sandy/wooded trails.
In addition the sand dunes & uneven trails make it difficult to tell elevation/direction.
Even as an experienced outdoorsperson I found it difficult to keep my bearings.
The beach is beautiful but tiny & extremely rocky once you get into the water.
After a short & strenuous hike (which granted is what I wanted!) I relaxed at the beach for a bit before heading back.
Although I had ample water, trail snacks, appropriate gear, etc. I ended up on the opposite side of the park when heading back due to a complete lack of mapped/marked trails or even trails that led anywhere period!
I'd try to circle back but you never know where the trail you're on is going to take you.
After a few hours of hiking I cut my losses & found the access road that eventually leads to the highway & hiked that back to my car.
. please come prepared with a fully charged phone should you get lost & somehow be able to get some cell reception, a compass, knowledge of the parks layout, & plenty of water, snacks, layered clothing, any meds you might need, etc.
just keep a good attitude (you chose to come here expecting strenuous hiking!) & always be prepared!
Maybe there's an easier way to traverse the park but if there isn't just be prepared for a potential several hours of hiking + several hours of beach time & plan your daylight accordingly :)response / report this review -

Wow! What a hike very steep sandy dunes to get to the lake but very fun treck. It starts out in the woods and then water. The trail we took was about .6 of a mile. It was fun to see dogs enjoying the beach as well!

A short hike through the woods leads to a very quiet beach. There are mosquitoes on the wood path, so bring your bug spray. They won't bother once you get to the beach. Dogs are allowed on leash. There is no fee for this beach. There are no lifeguards at this location. If you follow the paved path you will come to a point where there are two options: straight on a sand path or right up a steep sand dune. Take the right path and follow the path through the Dunes. You will find your way to the lake on this path. Cell service is iffy.

Would be nice if there were signs indicating the best way to get to the beach. From what we could find you had to climb 50ft sand dunes and we still weren't sure if that was correct. The park was listed as handicap accessible and there's parking for it but after wandering the woods for an hour with our son in a wheelchair and no clear way to go to get to the beach we decided to leave.

Grande Mere State Park is a diamond in the rough. From the entrance of park it looks like your typical state park set in treetops and trails. The further you walk you hit the start of miles of dunes and endless sky. Its a great spot to walk your dogs. The reward at the end of hike is inviting and blue Lake Michigan.

This place is no Warren Dunes where you just drive up and boom you're there at the water. I parked in the lot down the dirt road off Thornton Drive (not sure if that's the only entrance) and had to hike through some woods and over some hills before getting to the water. Really, really beautiful scenery and lots of trails that have some memorable and gorgeous views. And it was so quiet (in July no less). Really love this place.

A US Natural Treasure. A series of isolated glacial formed lakes tucked just behind Lake Michigan's sand dunes. The south lake is pristine with no man made construction or destruction.

A great place for a wet and sandy adventure. We came in January when the wetlands were flooded over the paved paths. Bring boots, towels, and an attitude for fun.
