Most enjoyable State Park I have stayed at on my trip so far. I started in Maine and if not walked over 900 miles down the coast staying in state campgrounds. I really loved it here. The Fort itself was so interesting. I also really loved the camping. Having the water on all sides was so amazing and peaceful.

Super fun family vacation. The cabins are surprisingly stunning. Watch out for the raccoons. They stole a Crock-Pot full of pulled pork

State park in Georgia. Pay to see fort then the parking is free. Good site and well run by the park officials. Nice museum and film included. Small gift shop.

Staff was very friendly. Hiking trails were closed due to damage from flooding. We didn't go to the fort. We walked along the causeway. It's about 2.5 miles from the parking lot to the campground and back. HIGHLY recommend taking bug repellent! Mosquitos were out in full force. There was a nature trail but as soon as we entered the woods there was a cloud of mosquitos around us so we ran away.

Very informative and nicely displayed museum regarding the history where the park is located, as well as the fort and Civil War history. The fort is restored with a great self-guided walking tour, and enjoys a beautiful location on the Ogeechee River. The park also offers a wide variety of other activities from hiking to camping.

Just spent $9 looking at mounds of grass-covered dirt, a few cannons & reproduction buildings. The largest & probably most interesting building was locked & the open ones were smaller than a backyard toolshed. It is probably worthwhile during special event demonstrations or reenactments, but should be free otherwise. I've seen more interesting Indian mounds & cannons in city parks than this, so I give it my America's lowest value per dollar award ever.

We stayed at Site #2 at Savage Island Campground at Fort McAllister State Historic Park in Georgia 07/01/17 - 07/04/17. It was just as beautiful in person, and I'm sure we'll go back. The Rangers and employees at the gift shop/registration were extremely nice and helpful. The bath house was clean AND had real, doors on the showers, WITH LOCKS! Good kayaking on Ogeechee River!
The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that they do not assign spots; you pick from what's available when you arrive. We got lucky - ESPECIALLY on July 1st - and got the LAST spot on the marsh! If we had had to set up camp on one of the inner roads, it would not have been as pleasant as those sites are a LOT closer together. It looks like they had quite a bit of damage from Hurricane Matthew that they're still cleaning up, and it wiped out a LOT of the trees. So, now, the view for a lot of those inner sites is literally other campers. That's fine, but not what I care to view when having my morning coffee. 😉 We prefer county/state/national parks for that reason: We like the views and we don't want to feel like we're in a parking lot. We found the sites to be very spacious by comparison to many, including some very spacious sites along the water front. There aren't any actual waterfront sites though, as the foliage largely blocks the view. We had a lantern post, firepit, and picnic table, all in good shape. The site wasn't paved, and most of the roads weren't either. That could get a little dicey during a deluge, but they were in good shape for our stay, aside from a bit of a rough ride. Keep your speed low where it should be and you'll be fine. None of the sites have sewer, and you cannot reserve a specific site. It's first come first serve. We should have taken note of the various bug repellent offerings they had in the office, as the mosquitoes took notice of us shortly after arrival. They offer firewood at the campground, on the honor system 24 hours a day. We did not use the bath house or dump station, but they all looked well kept on the outside. There was a lot of recently cleared areas, with a good bit of debris around here and there. It added to a more 'rustic' feel than some campgrounds that can be sterile. It was just a quick overnight for us, so we did not visit the park beyond the campground.

What do my taxes pay for? It's sad we have to pay to see the main and only attraction of this state park! It's a state park and for families who are looking to spend the day at a park this isn't the place!

Clean bathrooms. Took my boys from the church out there camping and had a great time. Did some fishing built the fire slept in or tents.

Camped here and the employee or host Tim was incredibly rude they don't give instruction at check in on where you can set up camp so I had to move with 2 small kids. Tim even made my autistic child cry because he came up and started yelling at her that she was not allowed to be in the spot she was in even though we where told we could stay anywhere that was not reserved. The bathrooms at the tent section where extremely outdated and ran out of hot water after 10 minutes. Everything else was really good. Not sure if we will camp back there because of the staff member but it truly is beautiful.
