Edward McKay's has been Greensboro's quintessential used bookstore for decades now. They also stock a good selection of used CDs, vinyl, and video games for just about every console out there.
The only caveat is that they seem to offer less cash for used items than they did in the old days, and they are more picky about what they are willing to pay for. However, they do offer reasonable trade-in value for the same items.
If you are looking to expand your music, book, or game collection via purchase or trade, Edward McKay's is the best place in town. But if you need quick cash for your old stuff, be prepared to come up short.
Cool place. Lots of book. Wierd prices on some items. Some you can get real cheap. Others cost new, which is weird. But still a fun store to shop at. Check it out.
I love this place. Whether it's a book for school or leisure, wanting to kick it old school with plenty of records or an endless supply of CD's to choose from, or feeling a cheap movie night with, seemingly, thousands of titles to choose from, you need to visit McKay's. They even have board games and a lot of electronics. Anything they sale, they will also buy. It's easy to lose a few hours in here. The only downside is that they used to be the place to go for video games, but their prices went through the roof when Edward was taken out of the name.
I love the prices. The only down side is that they don't have a way to look up DVDs to see if they have them since they catalog them in different places like I've seen things I would consider comedies catalogued in horror or things that people would think were drama in comedies so without being able to look them up you literally have to take forever going down every aisle. Their book section is WONDERFUL as long as you know the author. I really love this store a
This place is one of the top things I miss about Greensboro. I love the selection here, and you can't beat the prices, except sometimes on amazon. Plus they have everything new and old for books, music, movies, games and more. So much more organized than in the past, and tons of great stuff to find every time you go in. I make it a point to stop by every time I'm in town.
I call and the message said they don't have time to answer the phone and search for things you might be looking for. So after coming highly recommend from another book store I make the 45min drive to see if they have what I need. I get there and they can't even tell me what section the Math book I was looking for might be in.
Then I walk through the EMPTY line to the check out and while waiting take four steps further to look at another item and come back before the person in front of me is finished checking out and was told the line was "way back there" (now having 5 people in line). I explained that I had been standing here for a few minutes and just walked over 5ft and came back. The cashier then replies with "well I didn't know because the line is over there but whatever." Rings up my books, hands me my receipt and says "next person" without even bagging them!
This was our first time in this store and will definitely be our LAST!
I have NEVER in my life experienced worse customer service!!!
There are plenty of jobs out there so if you can't do yours or don't like it then go get a different one!!!!
Great place to find used books, games, DVDs, Blu-rays, and music. Courteous and helpful staff as well. You can bring your used items here to get cash or trade credit too! Excellent prices on most everything in the store.
The staff here are very friendly and usually a lot of fun. The selection of books is always changing, so it's a great place to go back to. Video game selection is surprisingly diverse and at least comparable in price to other used games, sometimes better.
They will not longer answer the phone. Their website says they cannot do searches over the phone. So you can't call to see if they have a particular book before going over there - AWFUL customer service! I live in HP so want to know before I go. Worth it to pay more - maybe - on Amazon than drive all the over to find they don't have it. This is a change - used to be able to call and ask and they would look it up. Their voice message says - they MAY return a call within a few days! WHAT?! Again, horrible customer service so I looked on their website to see what it said. "We understand that it can be frustrating to not have a phone call returned, especially if you only have a quick question. We have tried to avoid this frustration by having our answering message and website address frequently asked questions. We allow those devices to pinch hit for us so that we can focus our attention on the needs of the store and the customers that are currently shopping in it. (is the code for we don't have enough staff working to answer the phone?) If the answer to your question is given by the message, then your call might not be returned because we assume you have already received your answer. To tell you the answer again would be moot, and we do not want to insult your intelligence. If your question is not answered by either of those devices, then we welcome you to leave a message letting us know what you need." What a condescending approach to working with customers.!!!
I used to love this place and I would beg my dad to bring me here whenever he had the money. Now it sucks.
I bought TES: Morrowind a few months back and I wasn't able to play it simply for the fact that the area code was not for the US. They refused to give me a refund and the staff were really rude about it. Plus, one of the books I wanted to buy was 20.00, even though it was shabby, highlighted in, and well used. I only expect to see that kind of price for a book in Barnes and Noble.
Don't go here; you'll find books in better shape for less on Amazon.
My regular hangout for cds. Great selection of different genres. Quite a bit bigger and better than the Winston store too. Haven't found a store any better than this one in my area.
Great used book store with a huge selection. Very well organized & easy to shop. Buy or sell at good prices. Friendly helpful staff.
If you're looking for some great buys on books or dvds this is definitely the place to go especially by organization. As for selling your college textbooks, that's another story. I attempted to sell my textbooks from this past spring semester and I was offered 18.00 for four textbooks. One of my textbooks I paid 200.00 for in January brand new. They were busy and it took a little over an hour for them to give me an estimate and I didn't mind until I was offered 18.00. The market they are making by giving people nothing for their expensive textbooks is huge. I wouldn't recommend any college student to sale this store your textbooks.
Great selection of retro games as well as lots of books. I sold an old textbook there that no one else would but. Friendly staff and fast service
