Practice Portion Control Food servings have grown larger and larger over the years. And fast-food restaurants aren't the only places you'll find supersized meals. Researchers have noted that from 1970 through the 1990s, portion sizes of hamburgers, burritos, tacos, french fries, sodas, ice cream, pie, cookies, and salty snacks increased -- whether the foods were eaten at home or at restaurants. What does a healthy serving size look like? *A cup of fruit should be no larger th...an your fist. *An ounce of meat or cheese is about the same as the size of your thumb from base to tip. *3 ounces of meat, fish, or poultry (a normal serving) is about the size of your palm.

Reduce Stress and Rev Up Your Life -- Focus on the Present -- Be aware of where you are and what’s happening right now. Some call this mindfulness. It can help you relax and lower your stress. Let go of thoughts about the past or future. Focus on this moment. How does the air feel against your skin? How does the pavement feel under your feet? If your mind wanders, bring it back to the here and now.

Weigh yourself only once a week. People who weigh themselves regularly tend to have more weight loss success. But most experts suggest weighing yourself only once a week, so you're not derailed by daily fluctuations. When you weigh yourself, follow these tips: Weigh yourself at the same time of day, on the same day of the week, on the same scale, and in the same clothes.

SNEAK WATER INTO YOUR DAY - Add a Twist A little squeeze of lemon can make plain old water a bit more interesting, and it’s good for you, too. Lemons have antioxidants and potassium to help keep your cells healthy, and citric acid to help with digestion and prevent kidney stones.

REASON WHY YOU MAY NOT BE LOSING WEIGHT - Stress Gives You Snack Attacks If you feel tense, you’re more likely to reach for unhealthy, high-calorie treats for a quick comfort fix. You may eat when you don't really need food.

REASON YOU MAY NOT BE LOSING WEIGHT - You Sit All Day Your desk job or TV obsession may make it harder for you to drop those pesky pounds. When you sit most of the time, your body can lose its ability to know when you’ve eaten too much -- you can overeat and gain weight. Even brief exercise breaks during the day can help you stay healthy. Get up for three 10-minute walks around meetings or your favorite shows.

Most of the people who come to our program have already tried “everything”. What makes weight loss such a difficult and, for many people, next to an impossible task? There is no simple answers we do not completely understand the cause and progress of a chronic condition known as obesity. The fact is that only for some people, being overweight is simply a result of overeating. For these “fortunate” few, readjustment of caloric intake and/or an increase of physical activity... (energy spending) will solve the problem. However, for most people, overweight problems arise without their “help”. Complex genetic factors, metabolic, physiological, and biological changes eventually determine each person’s tendency to become overweight or stay slim.

This is why the weight loss and the maintenance programs should never be taken “lightly.” You are dealing with a chronic condition. There is no such thing as a seven-day diet, a 30-day diet, a 24-hour diet, etc. Fortunately for most, weight loss can be accomplished. Your success is dependent upon three major factors:

    (1) Your determination (2) Understanding of the program (3) Adherence and continuity

The best immediate and long-term results will be accomplished when several methods are applied at the same time, such as dieting restrictions, medications improving metabolism, behavior modifications and increased physical activity.

PROTEIN BREAKFAST IDEA - Veggie Frittata With 6 grams of protein each, eggs are a smart way to start the day. For an easy one-dish breakfast, whip up a frittata: Beat eggs with salt and pepper. Mix in fillings, like sauteed spinach, peppers, onions, etc. Pour it in an oven-safe skillet, and cook over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes. Then put it in a 350-degree oven, and bake for 10 to 15 minutes.

Sip Plenty of Water Instead of sugar-heavy soft drinks and juices, sip low-calorie beverages, such as water and herbal tea. Water can curb your hunger and help you feel full, but it can also fend off fatigue and give you more energy. Miss flavored drinks? Try infusing your water with a slice of citrus or sprig of mint.

10 WAYS TO CONTROL YOUR EATING:

    1. Chew gum in the grocery store! 2. Serve yourself healthy stuff first. 3. Buy your lunch with cash ... 4. Turn off TV cooking shows 5. Use blue plates (The more the food blends in with the plate color, the more chow you’re likely to take!) 6. Use smaller bowls and plates 7. Hit the pause button before giving in to a craving. 8. Keep unhealthy snacks out of sight 9. Always order the “small.” 10. Eat slowly, and drink water!

*Give Yourself Proper Portions** You might think you’re likely to eat more when you’re really hungry or if you’re digging in to one of your favorite dishes. But that’s not always the case. One of the biggest things guiding how much you eat is portion size. Studies show that people eat more food, even if they don’t like it, when it’s served in a large container. So serve food on smaller plates to limit how much you eat.

TRY THIS: Set Up Your Food Storage Out of sight, out of mind -- and mouth. After you purge your home of those treats you can't resist, assign shelves in the pantry and the fridge so your healthy food becomes easy to see and reach. Put fresh veggies and fruit at eye level instead of inside a drawer, and you're more likely to grab them when you open the door.
