Superb place for nature landscape photography. But know that the forest 75 road may not be open even if the national forest service website says it is open. I drove from Washington D.C. to dolly sods, and the road was blocked 3 times. It seems like the national forest agent does not really know if it is open or not when I talked over the phone. By the way, Red Creek Campground closes on Dec 1 which means the road should be open by Dec 1 to access the campground. After that day, it will be difficult to determine whether the road is open or not. Also, make sure that you are wearing the bright colored shirts and hats during hunting season.

It's all sky at dolly sods! The Alleghany mountains are beautiful. Bring drinks and a picnic and hike for hours! Absolutely beautiful.

Amazing scenery, sometimes I would look at the landscape and it was hard to believe we were in West Virginia. Looks more like Canada or Alaska or similar. Be careful though, you definitely need to be prepared for the elements.

I was there in August 2017 and the night I stayed at the Red Creek Campground the wind was crazy loud all night long and it was cold (for Aug anyway probably in the low 50s/upper 40s and windy with light rain).

It was a little better in the back country the following night at a lower campsite, but still be prepared for wind and the elements. Completely worth it if you like to camp/backpack but don't expect a visitor center or something similar. This is a wilderness area!!

Also forest road 75 is a gravel road that winds up a hill. Totally passable (in summer anyway) but know that it is not paved and it is a good 20-30 minute long ride up a bumpy gravel road just to get up to Dolly Sods, and then you have the elements to deal with. Also there is a gate that is closed for some of the year so check that.

Overall this an amazing place to camp/hike/backpack. Absolutely stunning scenery and honestly if you look at some of the pics I never would have guessed this was in WV. It sometimes looks more like Canada or Alaska or something, definitely worth checking out if you have the gear. This is one of my favorite places on the east coast to camp/backpack!

Backpacked over Memorial Day weekend and it was soggy but entirely worth the three days of wet socks and shoes. Beautiful, varied landscape--open meadows and mountain ridges, spruce and pine forests, a wide variety of plant life.

However, I would strongly advise hiking shoes (ideally waterproof), good hiking socks, and being okay with getting muddy. The trails are wet and hiking off-path and/or in tennis shoes has contributed a lot to trail erosion.

This place is absolutely beautiful. Very peaceful and clean! There isn't much too it as a national park should be, just the wilderness and you. Lots of trails. Things to see on every inch of trail. There is alot of trails. My girlfriend and I hiked a two day trip, and every second of it was memorable. If you love the outdoors this is a great place to see. Maps were accurate and plenty of campsites.

This place is unbelievably beautiful, even though it is not easily accessible. Many hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty and open camping. There is no bath house or water available. Not too far from the town of Davis. A great day trip when staying at Blackwater Falls or Canaan Valley.

Absolutely beautiful! The scenery is stunning and varied. A very peaceful place to hike. Be sure to print a map to bring with you. The signs are great but you need a map to know how the trails connect.
