I purchased granite countertops for my kitchen remodel from Lowes and their chosen fabricator/installer Discover Granite. My wife and I drove up to Discover in Wallingford CT, picked our granite and gave them our D bowl sink for the project. The counter showed up with a mismatched sink cut out (they used their own digital template for a different shaped D bowl sink), and a hairline crack that went all the way around the strip of granite in front of the sink. All of it was noticed after it was installed but before the installer left he said I could talk to office if I wasn't happy with it. To their credit, Discover stood behind it by agreeing to replace it and assured me that I would get a matching piece based on serial number grouping. The replacement showed up loaded with fissures, nowhere near as dark or pretty in coloring as the original sections that remainined in our kitchen, and it’s nothing I would have ever picked myself (my own fault for not going back to pick the replacement). But, it’s also ¾” longer than it is supposed to be, and it showed up with the exposed end rough cut and not even polished. The installer noticed that right away and did his best to polish it out in my driveway with an angle grinder. Now that end stands there facing you with an uneven spotty dullness that in no way compares to the polished edges of the other pieces, and the overhang comes closer to the doorway than I originally spec’d and doesn't match the counter on the opposite side. When you add up all the mistakes possible on a simple 9 ft long counter top, it tells you how little thought and care they put into my project either time.

We spent the extra money to go with Granite because we believed it was going to be the showpiece of our little kitchen remodel. And I’m sure Discover will write me off as someone who just can’t be pleased. But what I really am is a person who doesn’t just accept everything thrown my way when I know it’s not right. Even after all is said and done, my wife and I look at what we picked on one side of the kitchen and what we ended up with for our main run of counter in disgust on the other side. So do yourself a favor, when you get excited by how much you can save using a big box store’s fabricators/installers, remember this review and the pay the extra $500-$1000 so you at least end up happy when it’s all done. You have the money because you're going with granite in the first place.
