SWB™ - The Diagnostra airless bladder provides constriction of the blood vessels in the wrist in order to monitor BP. This device uses electronically activated Smart Woven Textiles to produce the equivalent pressure of an air-bladder. Working with engineers at UNLV, a prototype was developed using Shaped Metal Alloy (SMA) Nitinol springs, and tested to the equivalent pressure of an air bladder. New developments in Woven Carbon Nano-tubes (CNT) were to provide an alternative however, the cost was prohibitive. Recent developments by CNT developers have provided an inexpensive alternative to CNT. The new material uses coiled polymer fibers to deliver an extremely low cost and robust alternative. This artificial muscle material can be woven into fabric and can contract up to 49%, lift loads over 100 times heavier than human muscle of the same length and weight. It can generate 5.3 kilowatts of mechanical work per kilogram of muscle weight, similar to that produced by a jet engine.
