  Did You Know?

  St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, the saint’s religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for more than 1,000 years.

  However, did you know St. Patrick is not even Irish? The patron saint of Ireland was actually born in Britain when it was part of the Roman empire. He was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland where he lived in captivity for nearly 6 years.... Patrick later fled to England, where he received religious instruction before returning to Ireland to serve as a missionary. He wrote in Latin and signed his name “Patricius,” but according to some accounts he was born Maewyn Succat. Credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and driving snakes from the Emerald Isle (myths which have since been debunked), St. Patrick ministered tirelessly to combat Paganism throughout his life.

  Today, people of all backgrounds celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Although North America is home to the largest productions, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many other locations far from Ireland, including Australia, Japan, Singapore and Russia.
