Les Kippel founded The First Free Underground Grateful Dead Tape Exchange in 1971. Dead Relix magazine printed its first issue in 1974.
Relix is currently the second oldest continuously published music magazine, after Rolling Stone. Relix, originally named Dead Relix, began its publication as a newsletter for Grateful Dead tape collectors (many considered the Tape Exchange to be the original concept for Napster), but soon developed into a music magazine, covering a wide variety of musicians.
Relix was on the cutting edge of music publications by not only putting the Grateful Dead on the cover, but also Phish, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Widespread Panic, and many others.
