I drove all the way out there and it took me to one pissed off farmer's property. I kept driving around that area driving miles down the road and getting lost. He got suspicious of the same truck driving slow down the road. He came up to my truck and was saying there isn't anything special out here and acted like he didn't know what I was talking about. What did I miss, where is this place!?

The bucolic community of Dawsonville, GA, some 50+ miles north of Atlanta, became home to the Georgia Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory (G.N.A.L.) from the 1950′s until 1971. In 1956, the United States government purchased 10,000 acres of open fields and woods from the Tucker family of Dawsonville. Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, along with the Air Force and the Atomic Energy Commission, began construction of the GNAL- also known as Air Force Plant # 67. The site is near the intersection of Highway 9 and Dawson Forest Road in Southwest Dawson County. Back in the late '50s, early '60s, there was actually an old Victorian type mansion back there, all by itself, urban legend has it that the entire family disappeared without a trace (cannot confirm whether their disappearance is a fact or not.) It's been demolished since then, however. The actual location of where the underground nuclear base was located, was flooded by the government after it was decommissioned in 1971. There's old offices, laboratories, and even a tank under water out there. There used to be a high level of radiation back there at the time. The government performed nuclear experiments between the '50s and up until it was flooded in '71. You can actually see some mutations out there (very rare, however). Two-headed deer, two-tailed skunks, fish with multiple eyes, areas of forest where absolutely nothing grows. And of course, where there is a secret military installation/base, you always have U.F.O. sightings reported, Dawson Forest is no exception. As recently as maybe 2010 a CNN reporter and his g/f were camping out in the vicinity and were woken up by loud, black-op helos chasing a triangular shaped craft. There have been cattle mutilations in Dawsonville (back in the '70s) as well. Hauntings, murders, U.F.O.s, Underground military bases and even a big foot sighting and mysterious unmarked government vehicles. Very creepy place, believe me. And of course, at nightbe sure that take a spare pair of underwear.

Upon reading Nik's review I had to go check out the nuclear aircraft lab. It's in the lower right corner of the management area off of dawson forest road. You can park in the area meant for horse trailers. Most the abandoned buildings are right off the blue/orange trail. Some of them have been fenced off and boarded up, but you can tell that a few determined people have made their way in regardless. There are strange concrete platforms that have been overgrown, with stairs that lead up to nothing but despite the graffiti-ridden structures, the area is actually quite nice. People can take their horses on the trails (so watch out for horse poo!) There is a waterfowl refuge on a large, serene looking pond. The Etowah River runs through this area too. It doesn't look that creepy during the day, but after reading the above mentioned comment I decided not to stay the night. Maybe I will one day, but no where near the plant! FYI- In other part of the WMA I saw signs saying that anyone camping/hiking/hunting needed to purchase a pass or pay a trail user fee, so my suggestion is to research that (at GA Forestry Commision) before heading out.
