Central Florida Theater Festival

James Brendlinger and Penguin Point Educational Theater are excited to announce a new high school theater festival for students in grades 9-12 from public, private, charter, and home schools in Central Florida. This is a brand-new festival focusing on students creating, sharing, and celebrating theater. Plans are still developing, but here is the current information as of August 2020:

WHEN:
April 23-24, 2021, following any Covid-19 safety precautions needed by then. Online Registration will begin in January 2021!

WHERE: One Act Plays at Winter Springs High School; Interactive Events & Workshops at Oviedo Mall; Mainstage Plays at local high schools.

WHO CAN ATTEND?
Teachers can register themselves & any current students they choose to bring; parents can sign up their home school students as independent participants as long as an adult chaperone is provided. There is no qualifying event—everyone can play!

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Registration for each individual will cost $45. This includes all participation fees, awards, t-shirt, badge, insurance, and program. (For internal use, this covers facility rental, security, staff background checks, custodians, workshop presenters, mentors, and infrastructure.) Additional fees for Mainstage Play tickets will be negotiated with the host schools for those events. Saturday lunch plans through the Oviedo Mall Food Court will be available for $7 at the time of registration; concessions will be available for sale at all times.

STUDENT BENEFITS?
Students will focus on theatrical creativity and collaboration; much of their work will be produced during the festival itself. Students will work with mentors instead of judges. There will be awards based on both audience choice and mentors’ choice for various activities. Scholarships to summer programs and other artistic development opportunities will be offered regardless of grade
level. Local colleges may offer scholarship auditions on site for seniors.

April Madness Improv Challenge (each group gets to enter a team in our brackets!)

Flash Choreography Challenge (learn a whole song in 45 minutes and perform it onstage!)

Mystery Box Costume Construction Challenge (oh, you’ll see!!)

Publicity Design Art Gallery

Theater Cosplay Contest (Dress as your favorite Broadway character all day long)

Flash Mob Showcase (Each group will be included in a mall-wide musical apocalypse!)
