In November of 2005, the Center for Public Policy and Social Research (CPPSR) at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) became an archive partner with the Library of Congress on the Veterans History Project (VHP). A unanimous vote of Congress in 2000 created the VHP to collect and preserve the oral histories of our country’s wartime veterans and civilians who have supported the war effort in a significant way. CCSU is privileged to participate in this worthy and historic endeavor.

The VHP at CCSU is primarily focused on collecting the oral histories of veterans while they are still with us. The collection includes the video taped interview of each veteran along with any photographs, military documents, field maps, journals and other related materials. Participating veterans include those from World War II, the Korean War), the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts.

The mission of the VHP is three-fold: to preserve, to honor and to educate. We have conducted over 300 interviews to date, which are digitized and accessible to the public through our on line digital collection. A copy of everything is sent to the Library of Congress to be preserved in their collection as well as ours. Anyone with an internet connection can access these unique personal accounts of important moments in history, including first-hand accounts of battles, recollections of basic training and memorable experiences, and descriptions of military life from the men and women who lived the “war experience”. Information on our website is used by researchers, educators, historians, students and veterans. For educators, we have developed lesson plans for several curriculum units which can be downloaded at no cost and used in the classroom.
