Why anyone would bash or try to ruin one of the best things that has happened to many young girls is beyond me. Camp Dovewod has some of the most caring and compassionate people working with these young girls. The Richmonds live their lives as good Christian people and for one person, Lisa Benton, to try to destroy their spirit is just unconscionable! She MUST have way too much time on her hands because this camp wrote on the slate of who my daughter has become in the last 13 years of attending this awesome camp. Shame on you Lisa Benton for airing your dirty, nasty , unfounded opinion on such good people!!

Camp Dovewood was so dirty, unorganized, and unsanitary that we turned around and left. This camp was nothing like the pictures on their web page. The Registration" area was held in a tiny, hot, dirty room, which I later learned was the kitchen/cafeteria. There is no way that it would pass any standard food safety inspection. None of the camp employees said hello to our daughter, and there was no streamlined process. We eventually led ourselves to her cabin without direction or instruction.

The "cabin" was an old, dirty trailer packed with 16 bunk beds, and two of those were located in a filthy trailer kitchen. The kitchenette area was covered with old Pop Tarts and Little Debbie cakes from a previous camper. The nasty refrigerator had one bag of rotten carrots inside. The exterior of the trailer had been enclosed to make it look like a log cabin from the outside, and it was located very close to the highway with no security. Keep in mind that the county jail is located 14 miles down that road. I had to introduce myself to the cabin counselor, who did not speak to our daughter at all, nor did she seem capable of supervising 16 girls.

Everything we saw there was run down and in questionable condition, including the swimming pool and the tennis courts. The bus was so old that my daughter thought it was a nostalgic keepsake on the property.

We decided to speak with the owner before leaving, just in case there was a misunderstanding. We expressed our concerns and were met with little response, which seemed odd to me for any owner who claims to put such heart and soul into a camp experience. She quickly returned our check without question or concern, which leads me to think that we are not the first people to walk out of Camp Dovewood.

Despite the positive reviews, I have also read that negative reviews were deleted from their page in the past. If you want to know the type of people who go here, check out the nasty, vitriolic responses to my Facebook review (quote the opposite of the Christian principles supposedly taught at the camp). After what we saw, we would never our daughter there. I would recommend a better camp in NC or Maine for a safer, cleaner camp experience.

Camp Dovewood is an amazing Christ-Centered girls camp!! There are a lot of great activities and wonderful counsellors that work with the girls. You will make lifelong friendships and meet amazing people here. This camp is full of God's girls who love Jesus and camp!! Mrs. Richmond is a great camp director who always wants what's best for everyone at camp! I love Dovewood!! 😀

I attended this camp for many summers as a girl and then moved into a full time counselor as a college student working six weeks, consecutively, for four summers. The learning experiences that I had during my times at Dovewood can not be counted. It is a Bible based, Christian, all girls camp. I recommend it in every aspect of it.

Overall the camp is ok. The first year my daughter went, she didn't get to do a lot of the things I signed her up for. This year, she was bullied the whole week in the loft cabin. I sent her to a christian camp thinking that the kids would be kinder and I wouldn't have to worry about mean girls. I was also horrified that she came back with dread locks. She is 9 and it didn't seem like anyone was supervising grooming of the kids. What was suppose to be great experience for her, ended up being not such a great experience for any of us. I was so sad that she had that experience. Lastly, I made "friendly" mention of the bulling of my daughter on their facebook page and it was deleted. No phone call to me was ever made. I am sure there are better camps out there for the price.
