Great German Food owned and operated by a German Chef and American spouse. Upscale food but with friendly, home style environment. Great attentive staff and open for Lunch, Brunch and Dinner. Find famous Capital Hill governments, DC tourists, and regulars often.
Very good food and HUGE beers for a good price. They have several holiday options as well. Reservations not needed but also not a bad idea. The options for dessert are also great. The authenticity is not found anywhere else. Good wait staff.
Exceptional food, especially for a neighborhood where drinking is more prominent in the establishment. The portions and prices are also well above par. And, there are several authentic menu items unique to the place. I recommend the Sauerkraut balls for starters. The only disappointment was that service was slow -- but friendly. We got the impression that several of the team were new. We had a great time, so the delays were inconsequential, but don't plan for anything fast.
Had a great Christmas dinner with family. Food was delicious and three of us had leftovers there was so much! Excellent price. Nice beer list and server took the time to explain the seasonal drafts. Server told us they all work as a team so feel free to speak to anyone for service which we did so there wasn't a problem in that regard. We will be back!
This is a quaint little place in a good location near the Library of Congress. I can't profess to be an expert on German cuisine, but I'd like to think I can tell when something is made fresh versus from a can or is made using shortcuts.
My girlfriend and I decided to just do appetizers as we had an important dinner later that day. We ordered the mac and cheese, schnitzel, soup, potato dumpling, and potato pancakes.
My favorite was the potato dumpling. Interestingly it had the texture of sticky rice but in potato form and was served in a pool of beef gravy. The gravy was very potent and tasted like stock broth from a jar, but very good!
The pancakes were also good and are basically hash browns (luckily I like hash browns) and served with apple sauce and a pumpkin butter. Never had that combination before but it was extremely tasty.
The other two either lacked flavor (mac and cheese) or were too damn good to be legally sold. But again I could taste the shortcuts and enough of them made me feel a little disappointed.
Fantastic, attentive, friendly service and excellent food. Beautiful patio seating too!
I was SEVERELY dissapointed with my visit here for the Oktoberfest Saturday. We had a reservation at 1:30pm and when we walked in, we were in happy spirits and excited to be there. We walked out frustrated, upset and disrespected after waiting half an hr. When we were greeted, the server was rude and told us "it will be a while"....well we had a reservation and why was she being rude to us about our reservation? Then we waited 30 mins where we seemed to be in the way and grumpy servers rushing past. Finally two seats at the bar opened and we seated ourselves. The bartender was not friendly at all and then when we went to order, they had already run out of the suckling pig "Spanferkel"...which is the reason we had come. Not only that but the bartender was SUPER rude, unwelcoming, mean and down right I WILL NEVER visit this establishment again. No reason to be this rude. Especially when I was so excited to eat one of my favorite German meals.
Delicious food, good service. A bit of a wait but, well worth it.
Good beer, great goulash soup, excellent schnitzel. The spaetzel was awesome. The only thing not awesome was the service.
$10 happy hour liter beers. Amazing authentic German cuisine. Try the saurbratten and leave satisfied! One of the cheaper options for lunch in the area as well.
Good German dishes. Nice bistro setting. Was my 1st time going & the waiter was gracious enough to recommend some good plates. Definitely recommend going if you're in D.C.
Great beers, great food. Service usually good, but sometimes slow. The lady at the bar who usually seats patrons sometimes does not exude hospitality.
Love Cafe Berlin Excellent Service and Excellent Food! Never Disappointed!! Always dine here when visiting! Wish we had you in Indiana! Love the Outside dining ! ❤
We happened upon Cafe Berlin while checking Open Table for restaurants that had last-minute dinner reservations available on a rainy Saturday in late February. We loved it! The cozy restaurant is located within walking distance of Union Station (we had to catch a bus later in the evening) along a block with several other dining options. Our server was super-friendly and knowledgable. The food was creative and delicious. We would definitely go back the next time we're in DC!
Delicious German comfort food along with more fancy game dishes and the schnitzels are properly pounded thin. Very good beer selection as one can expect from a German restaurant.
The service was a very European slow. A bartender/mgr, and two servers handled two separated rooms barely. Food was good but I'd have appreciated being able to order a second drink. The staff came by the table only during food drop off and next course ordering which is understandable considering the number of tables they were required to serve. Pace and organization are necessities in this industry and the floor would have been helped by both.
Superb. German food can be bland. That's not the case here. Their lunch sandwiches are large, lots of flavor, and a great deal at about $10 for sandwich, soup of the day, etc. For dinner I had a pork chop special that was the best pork chop I've had I think ever. Some sort of sauce on it that was truly delicious.
Service is outstanding. That's a rarity in DC.
Highly recommend.
One of the best German restaurants I've eaten at in the US! Price is fair, the mustard is handmade by the chef!
I have to say this definitely the best German food I have ever had. Its super small but really friendly. The staff was extremely nice and made us feel very welcome. Everything is made from scratch. The servings were large just enough to get you completely full and very delicious.
