Charles is working daily to keep the fields mowed and the Farm beautiful. The berries are slowly ripening. We look forward to seeing our annual pickers again in a few more weeks!
Berries at dawn.

Lots of buds on the bushes. They usually ripen the end of July or early August. We'll keep you posted.

I am really looking forward to this day. Hope to see you there.
This is the enormous pile of Bittersweet, Virginia Creeper, Blackberry, and Hard Hack that Dottie cut out of the East ten rows of the Orchard Lot, in the months leading up to Christmas. The photograph doesn't do it justice. It's about 7' high and 25' long, or it was before I grabbed a perfect window of winter burning weather to reduce it.
She sure produced an amazing amount of work. Patient, steady application, perseverance in all weather, a clear goal, and a will. These... things are the very essence of husbandry. Gratification, in the field, is far from instant. There are no hyper-kinetic edits, no rock n roll sound track, no documentation at all. On the contrary, it is slow, grudging, and ephemeral. It's rich and deep though, and it arrives when someone says "Oh, that's my favorite picking spot" or when those rare people, given to careful observation, notice what was done, and nod, and knowingly acknowledge the long hours of labor offered, seemingly on the wind.
See MoreWe do not sit around twiddling our thumbs in the fall & winter months. Taking down trees, clearing bittersweet, and all the endless chores around the farm are keeping Charlie out of mischief.
We are pretty much done for this season. If you are extremely persistent, you might find 1 or 2 berries here and a few minutes later a couple of berries there. WARNING!! It will be a lot of effort for not many berries. A few berries in Orchard and Laneway. Plantation, Scotch and Swamp have no berries. See you next year! The gate will be closed for the season tomorrow afternoon.
I plan to check out all the fields tomorrow and will update the picking conditions.
Our season is officially ended. There will be no one working in the vardo to assist, starting Tues 9/4. We'll close the gate on Oct 1st.
Thanks neighbors! For another fun summer. We always meet new people, and make new friends, and that's the best part. Hope to see you next year.
Extra special thanks to Dottie Bonbrake :-)

See MoreMonday, Sept. 3rd. Still some ripe berries out there if you are willing to look for them. More berries to ripen every day. This is the last day I will be working at the vardo this summer. So come and get your swag on!
Check out the article in today's Berkshire Eagle. Their website has several photos which did not get published in the paper.
Sunday, Sept. 2nd. Decent picking today, but you might have to walk a bit to find them. It's a beautiful day to spend wandering in the fields enjoying this bucolic setting. Still a lot of not quite ripe berries which will be ripening in the next few days.
Saturday, Sept. 1st. Very good picking today. Beautiful day to pick lots of berries and get your swag for a memento. 70s, nice breeze, no humidity.
Thursday, August 30. We will be using the Honor System from 5 to 7 PM this afternoon. I have left the vardo unlocked. There are detailed instructions for weighing your berries next to the scale inside. I also suggested which fields are good picking right now. See you in the morning. Thank you.
FYI - Honor System is only cash or check made out to "Blueberry Hill Farm". Sorry for any inconvenience.
Thursday, August 30th. Lots of ripe berries. A perfect berry picking day here. A few clouds in the sky, 70s, brisk breeze, no humidity. It actually feels a little cool when the sun goes behind the clouds. A very welcome change after the last few days.
Wednesday, August 29th. Another sunny day with a pleasant breeze. Lots of berries just waiting for you to come pick them. Remember it is much cooler up here than it is down in Copake, Egremont, or other places in the valley. Come on up. I'll be at the vardo until 7 PM. Lots of swag available.
FYI - a vardo is an English gypsy wagon, which is what our wagon looks like.
