“Mom’s Words Monday”
You may remember hearing about the 13lb 0.5oz baby born at the Birth and Wellness Center last year... now you get to hear the story in Lauren’s own words:
I decided to use the Birth Center after my sister had such a positive experience with her daughter. I had already had my daughter naturally at a hospital, so we decided to have Finn somewhere more comfortable.
...After my water broke late in the evening, we drove to the birth center when contractions became more intense. I was excited and nervous, thinking, "Yay the baby is coming, but will it be like the last time and really long?" My daughter had taken over a day!
I was so happy to move freely and used the birthing ball, the shower, and the tub for pain management with my sister as a doula and my husband as support, with ocean sounds in the background. My positive affirmations kept me more centered and I repeated these in my head: "I can do this." "The only way out is through." "I am a badass!" "Ina May never saw a woman split in half, so I won't either!"
I was honored to have Jessica and Natalie by my side! Then I started to lose it. Contractions were so strong. I thought maybe I'm going through transition, so I asked them to check my dilation again. Thank God I was nearly there!
And then I felt the urge to push. I thought I wasn't gonna make it at this point and remembered how much I don't like pushing. It was so tough and I was wearing out.
At 7:28, Jessica, determined he had shoulder dystocia. At that point, the room got more serious but still calm and they kept telling me to push him out. I remember Joe saying over and over, "You're doing it, he's almost here!!" Those two minutes seemed to take forever, but I never felt scared. They flipped me, propped up my leg, and pulled him out. He was just gorgeous.
Then I was patting him on the front and back to help him start crying and Natalie helped. I had very slight hemorrhaging and incredibly no repair was necessary. They checked him over and started checking his stats. They tried weighing him with the spring scale, but it didn't work! The midwife laughed and said, "We can't use this." They had to get the digital scale out! Our big guy weighed 13 lbs 0.5 oz!! What a huge surprise!

• Did you know AT&T pays for doulas and childbirth education for their employees? • Does your employer? • If you don't know, ask! • If they don't, ask why not! • If you need help showing them that these are dollars well spent, let us know, we'd be glad to share some resources.

“Mom’s Words Monday” Alicia’s birth center story:
Hey everyone! I’ll share my experience from my most recent BWC birth! Went into labor on my due date and as usual my contractions are super irregular-I just try to move through them and keep moving. Luckily my midwife suggested to go home and rest and try the miles circuit which was the most amazing discovery known to man 😉 but really it broke my water on round two and positioned baby correctly. This was the first baby I’ve ...actually had involuntary pushing with which was awesome by the way! Emmett was born early AM successfully did his breast crawl! He’s such a sweet boy and I thank God for him everyday. I’m super blessed to have the amazing staff at BWC that has literally shaped my life in ways I would have never expected. I never wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse until I witnessed what real talent, devotion, and sacrifice goes into each and every birth.

Are you thinking about a home or birth center birth but people tell you "only crazy hippies do that"? • It's getting more popular than you think! Nearly 20% of Birth and Wellness Center births occur at home and more people are choosing it all the time. • Here's a story from Hillary Duff about why she chose to make the switch from hospital to home:
"Mom's Words Monday" Today is the birth of Chrystal's sweet Huck, all 10 lbs of baby love, at the birth center:
Huck's birth was my second at the Birth and Wellness Center. Since he was my fourth child, I thought for sure he'd come at 38 or 39 weeks like his two sisters & brother. I have big babies & with each pregnancy they get bigger. Jessica knew this was a fear of mine, but always put my worries at ease.

The majority of moms at the Birth and Wellness Center use warm water baths during labor, and about 70% choose a water birth. We think warm water can be an amazing tool to help mommas cope with the sensations of labor and delivery! #waterbirth #options

See MoreAs one of 47 awardees of the national Strong Start grant/research program, Birth and Wellness Center is proud to share a new report from the American Association of Birth Centers. Strong Start specifically focuses on women who would not be considered "low risk" due to history and/or demographics. We are intentional about reaching women who may not know that midwives are accessible to them. From AABC and the Strong Start report: Freestanding birth centers, founded in the midw...ifery model of care, are shown to reduce preterm birth by 26% compared to matched groups of women with usual [hospital-based] care. The report demonstrates birth center care has a larger potential impact on the reduction of preterm birth risk than any other recent medical or public health intervention. In particular, rates of preterm birth, low birthweight, and cesarean section were lower among Birth Center participants, and costs were more than $2,000 lower per mother-infant pair during birth and the following year.”
