We went to their event, "Zoo Light Safari" and it was incredible! It's not a big zoo but it's a good one. Very clean and good exhibits.

December 2017: Still one of my favorite tourist locations in the Birmingham area, but I can’t say I give my recommendation for the Zoo Light Safari. Most exhibits are closed, and not very many lights stand out beyond what you would see at a well-decorated house around Christmas. Save your money and go to the zoo during the daytime.

This is an inexpensive place to take your family. Loads of great animal exhibits including interactive exhibits. Reasonably priced food and refreshments. Free picnic areas. I've been to several zoos across the southeast and this is definately one of my favorite.

Beautiful place to walk and relax. Takes a few hours to see it all. Wear comfortable shoes.Has a carousel and a large slide for kids. A train to get to the opposite side of the park and a rocky area for kids to climb that has a roped, swinging bridge. It's clean and the attendances are friendly. They have a few empty areas where animals could be, but are not. I would like to see animals every time I turn my head. It's a zoo. The elephant looks sad. He has no room to walk. He needs a trail. He stands in one spot, shifting his weight back and forth. Give the poor guy a trail. That's what elephants do.

Nice Zoo they are constantly updating environments for the animals. Feeding times for the animals are around 10a and 4p. The animals are more active when it is cooler out. The zoo is also very clean, from inside the cages to outside of the cages, the walkways and the restrooms. The Cafe at the entrance has a good variety of food and snacks. I chose the veggie sub, it was delightful.
The only disappointed time we had was at the Red Diamond seal show which is at 10 and 2. About 30 adults and children waited for the 2p show and at 2p two female attendants came out from the wall and threw a couple of fish out to the seals and had one seal wave to the small crowd. The so called show was over in less than 10 minutes. No introduction, or information or anything was said over the PA system. I don't know how they can call that a show.
The train ride during Boo at the Zoo was enjoyable viewing the creative animated pirate theme characters.response / report this review -

Very nice zoo, very friendly staff, fun activities for the family. We stopped with our boys, 2.5 and 5 years old, on our way home from vacation. They had a pretty nice selection of animals, and they are obviously trying to improve the facilities. Our favorite part was probably the train ride!

Kids love the zoo and overall a great place. I do wish they would find a way to streamline the entrance process for members though. Sometimes both attendants will be working on new members and then 50 existing members all have to wait to go in since both kiosks are tied up. It would be better for those people to go one by one with one attendant and the other attendant keep scanning in existing members.

The zoo just beautiful!! The landscaping gives the feel of a natural habitat. The staff was so friendly and helpful. There is so much to keep kids entertained. There are plenty of snack stands all through the zoo to keep hydrated. We really enjoyed our visit.

This a fantastic historical place in Birmingham. They are currently undergoing construction and revamping up the place. It's always crowded so get there early or at least 2 hours before the zoo closes. There is a fantastic area behind the petting zoo of Alabama woodlands. We have a membership and love to go walking there.

The Birmingham Zoo is, and has been recently, on a precarious balance point. The zoo is trying to renovate, but most renovations are cosmetic and do not address the issue that the quality and quantity of actual animals exhibited are on a steady decline. They remove old exhibits without replacing them with new exhibits. They lose animals and do not get more. And yet the zoo continues to increase the price of admission. When they state they have about 800 animals, I feel like they are also counting each duck, turtle and goldfish swimming in the runoff ponds. Hopefully the zoo will be able to tip the scales and make some drastic improvements. However, until they do a zoo visit here is really not worth the cost of admission.

Great park. I had fun with my grandson. Buying tickets and understanding of colored bands could be improved. Waiting 30 minutes on train ride just to find my grandsons yellow band did not cover that. Ticket booth next to train was closed. I discussed this with the park manager and he said he could not help it if people did not show up for work. I suggested a sign explaining yellow bands

I have been at zoo all around the country. I like this zoo, I just feel it's in a transition from good to great. I feel the nocturnal animals should be in an around the is darker like the Cincinnati zoo has so you see the moving and not sleeping. The exhibits that were inside could be better like painted landscape on the back walls. I also noticed larger inside exhibits did not have water in them. Like the anaconda exhibit. My family had fun and we did see animal behavior we have not seen before like a lion stalking a bird like a house cat. The food we not worth the price and the customer service was mediocre at best. Over all we had a good day we had fun it a nice zoo and the animal staff was great and communicated well with us and answered any question we had.

Really nice zoo even with the current construction. We went early and the animals were up and active. We really liked the giraffes and the gigantic elephant. The train is super cool because it goes around the whole zoo! Our little one had a blast and we did too. Can't wait until the construction is completed!
