Our son is in his sophomore year at BSC, and loving every minute. He has been fully engaged by his professors, and has made some meaningful friendships. He started taking Chinese and is thriving. He's in a fraternity and is now on the InterFraternity Council. There are some wonderful campus ministries where he is being fed spiritually. There have been concerns voiced about campus safety: he has never felt unsafe, and trusts the campus security office and the fact that the campus is secured all the way around its perimeter. It truly is an oasis of learning and relationships for our son, and we are very grateful!
It should also be noted that the college recently announced the drastic reduction of tuition for students! This is great news and will hopefully have a ripple effect across many colleges.

I saw where someone said in these reviews the location was in a ghetto of Birmingham. Not true at all. It is in an older section and adjacent to some less-than-nice neighborhoods, but the college itself is a completely contained environment, with an absolutely safe and gorgeous campus. My niece had the most awesome college experience there, and my daughter is thrilled to be attending as a freshman next year. As a parent I can't imagine a better college environment, both academically and socially for my child.

Our daughter is currently a student and we are incredibly impressed with the faculty and staff's vested interest in the success of each student (not just academically, but as a whole person). Some have an issue with the safety of Birmingham, but this campus is walled off with one entrance/exit manned by an incredible security staff that knows it's students. It is consistently rated one of the safest campuses in the southeast United States.

I am a little torn about Birmingham-Southern: there were so many amazing professors here that I cannot help but say you might attend just for them. Dr. Levey, Dr. Barton, Dr. Mullins, Dr. Coyle, Dr. Rector, Dr. Law, Dr. McInturff (don't hold me to that spelling) and Dr. Ott are really awesome people who everyone should take classes from. They were truly awesome role models for me as I came up through the college ranks.

There are, however, negatives too: I often found students less dedicated to their studies than warranted, the campus police unwilling to enforce simple rules against underage drinking and illegal drug use, and some strong evidence that some members of the faculty adjusted grades on the grounds other than merit. I certainly hope that since my time at BSC this situation has changed.

Overall, I am still torn on whether I should have attended Birmingham-Southern. It is a difficult question, one that I cannot answer even in hindsight four years after graduation. Definitely make sure it is the right fit for you. Keep in mind that although the school is Methodist affiliated, not everyone who attends or teaches there is Christian or Methodist. In fact, you may even find some activities on campus of which Methodists and Christians alike might disapprove. Thus, although it appears to be a school similar to Samford University, it simply is not. The school does treat its alumni very well, and I oddly have to say that I enjoy being an alumni more than I enjoyed being a student.

My son is a freshman this year and is loving it. We live in a college town and felt a smaller school was a better fit for him. He has been challenged in his classes but has risen to the challenge. It may not be the right choice for everyone but we were impressed with the "family" feel of it. I DO feel like someone is looking after him there as opposed to at a larger school. It is not a dry campus BUT he tells me security will only intervene if you are doing something A) stupid or B) harmful to yourself or others. Bravo! They let the kids be kids in a safe, confined environment. He has made life long friends, he's excited about learning, and we feel he's at a really special place. Forward Ever!
