A nice place to hangout with friends in city and have barbeque. The shelters are not too many but it is enough for Iowa City and the neighborhood.

This whimsical park sits upon a hill and has lots of unique features. The play structure is one of my favorites in town and suitable for 1-5 year olds. There is a gravel path that leads through an old building site, a wooded area, a tree fortress, and back to the play structure. It's a perfect starter "hike" for littles. There's plenty of shade. There is occasionally garbage around, so please pick up after yourself. Parking is limited to a side street and the park entrance is on the other side so be careful crossing.

    Special features:
    Entrance arch
    Ruins/rubble
    Tree fortress with hanging bridge
    Wooded area
    Stump bear
    Tee-pee and arch tunnel
    Walking path

    Play equipment:
Slides: 1 spiral, 1 double curve
    Swings: none
    Climbers: 1 web, 1 curved slats, 1 c-ladder, 1 chain ladder
Extras: 2 driving wheels, tunnel, mirror

    Amenities:
    Gazebo
    Parking: limited street
    On-site water: yes, pump
    On-site bathroom: no

Heed my words: STAY ON THE TRAIL! If you are an off trail hiker like I am, I would steer clear of this dump. I would also avoid this park if you haven't had your tetanus shot recently. The entire park is smattered with thick underbrush, rusty mattress springs, broken glass, dilapidated brick walls with graffiti and various other junk. Deep into the middle area furthest away from Miller ave, there is also an enormous clearing where Iowa City's well paid homeless population apparently have bon-fires and other various debaucherous exhibitions. The "bum arena" as I like to call it, is lined with pallets from nearby businesses, lawn furniture and other rusty amenities. If you live in the area and your lawn furniture turns up missing, look here first! This land would be better used as another stupid car dealership.

    EDIT 5/1/2014:
I went back again today for the convenience of being nearby and because I seek morel mushrooms. After about 5 minutes off the trail I managed to find a heap of human feces and a pile of wadded up taco bell wrappers next to a makeshift tent made out of plastic wrap and blue tarp. I looked to the west and saw that the bum arena was in full swing with even more lawn debris and re-used garbage littering the hillside than the last time I ventured into this crap-hole. I quickly exited the park and I don't think I will ever return. Benton Hill park needs a "bum bomb" set off within its filthy confines.
