There are trade-offs for flying out of a small airport like BLI. At one time we had direct flights to Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, Oakland, Las Vegas, one of the LA airports, and at least three Hawaiian destinations -- primarily supported by Canadians seeking cheaper air travel. Competitive pressures also also helped keep prices down, adding to the popularity of Bellingham as a gateway to the Puget Sound Northwest Interior and Vancouver, B.C. Canadian tariffs on air travel and a stronger U.S. dollar have whittled away at the number of city pairs available today -- significantly decreasing options for direct service and increasing prices.
Because it is a small station for each of the airlines that serve BLI, airline personnel are spread-thinner and wear more hats than the personnel at larger airports. Although Alaska Airlines -- the fifth largest airline in the country -- is one of two airline's that dominate BLI's schedule, the personnel at the counter when I check-in are the same people who greet the incoming flight; load and unload baggage; and handle boarding at the gate. This means that when the local personnel are greeting an incoming flight -- unloading and reloading baggage and handling subsequent boarding and ground crew departure procedures for each departing plane -- there is nobody at the counter to sell tickets, check-in passengers, handle baggage issues, or answer questions.
Even so, flying in and out of Bellingham had significant advantages: (1) TSA personnel are friendlier, lines are typically shorter and the hassle-factor is perceptibly simpler; (2) Passenger Pick-up and Drop-off are a breeze; (3) There are only five Gates and two Baggage Claim Carousels; (4) Parking is fast, close to the terminal and significantly cheaper than SeaTac or Vancouver (YVR); and finally, (5) Airport traffic is virtually non-existent!
Bellingham airport is the worst airport ever experienced. If you think you come to airport 2 hours prior and catch the flight. Then you will be the looser. You need at least one hour to pass the security check. Security check area is the worst place. You will find only one person on checking your id and boarding pass and there will be 100s of people standing behind you. Please avoid going to this airport. If you can’t avoid then please be at least 4 hours prior.
Friendly TSA staffs w/ efficient security setup. Make my travel south of the border with smile.
These TSA agents would not last a day working at LAX or even Sea-Tac airports. Three of them are staring at one monitor with no brain activity reflection on faces and of course they call a supervisor to look at something (coffee mug). Why TSA is hiring a people who cannot handle authority and make a decision???
TSA agents are fat and extremely slow. Rude also. Making big deal out of nothing. I feel like a jew in Nazi Kemp
Amazing Staff! Thank you to the airport administration, airport security and Alaska Airlines for taking the time to look after my son who had an extremely bad morning. His fear of flying got the better of him and he showed up with more wine in him then anyone should. An Alaska Airlines employee kindly rebooked him on another flight. She was so kind and helpful when I spoke with her. Airport security helped him stay calm and gave him help by getting him food and water and a place to sleep it off. The Administration office personnel were great. When I called to explain what was going on they stayed in contact with me and had my son come up to the conference room so I could talk to him. He lost his phone so this was the only way I( being a panicked mother) had contact with my son. My son caught his later flight and made it safely home for a visit. He found $30 dollars in his pocket later that day that someone there was kind enough to give him. It is so refreshing to see that there are still people out there who care enough about people that they took the time to look after my son.
A couple things I loved about this tiny airport, great food options. Even the tiny market with coffee and snacks by the gates. The lady working there from 3am to 10am, was friendly and helpful. Loved her positive attitude. Hard to find that kindness at airports. Loved that they had protein options for snacks like cheeses and sandwiches. Bathrooms were clean and security wasn't too bad. But they were thorough and we're kind to my kids. Thanks b'ham!!
I worked there for almost a year. It is not a good work environment. I worked around bad co-workers and had a bad trainer. I dealt with discrimination and possible racism there. When they terminated me, one of the HR workers bopped her head side to side and did a finger twirl in the air at me and talked with a harsh voice. All three females were in the office that day.
There may also have been possible discrimination during the two-week new hire training at Seattle, WA. When each person was done taking the test, one of the office workers, possibly from HR, left all the dark skinned individuals behind, while the white skinned people got to leave first. "No words were said" of course, so how can you prove it was racism, RIGHT? God have mercy on us.
Small airport. Security is easy to deal with and friendly. Staff friendly. Gets very busy easy due to size
Pleasant terminal. 1-person wait to pass through TSA (agent was very nice). The only thing stopping BLI from getting a 5-star review was the de-icing delay - half an hour before the de-icing folks could get the job done. A minor quibble though because there are only 5 days below freezing on average the entire year - great airport.
This airport is a very pleasant expierence to take in. It is clean and well kept. I was very impressed with the friendliness of the staff.
LOVELY SMALL AIRPORT. LOTS OF SPACE FOR PARKING AND FREE SHUTTLE CONNECTING THE LOTS TO THE TERMINAL. FOOD IS GOOD BUT A LITTLE EXPENSIVE INSIDE THE TERMINAL
