Description

We are a family owned and worked small business in North Carolina. We operate The Barking Coyote Coffee Shop, Bakery, & Farm Store in Elkin; a licensed commercial kitchen/certified bakery, also in Elkin; and The Barking Coyote Farm, our home in Wilkes County.

The Barking Coyote Farm

Although we originally both worked at careers off of the farm, we began farming 1998 in order to provide healthy, pesticide free food for ourselves that we knew was being produced in an ecologically and ethically responsible manner and to provide winter hay for Jody’s family grass-fed, organic cattle farm. After the birth of our two children, our farming focus “evolved” and in 2008 we began participating in local farmers markets. This gave us the opportunity to provide our children with the “farming and farmers market experience”, allowed us to be contributing members within our local community, and gave us the chance to share with our neighbors quality produce and farm products and to meet like-minded customers and fellow farmers.

On the farm we currently grow a variety of fruits, berries, herbs, and heirloom vegetables. We also maintain 100+ free range chickens and a 10-hive bee aviary. We have approximately 110 fruit and nut trees - apple, peach, pear, cherry, plum, fig, pecan, and black and English walnut. We maintain raised beds of strawberry and rhubarb plants, 1,500 feet of both raspberry and blackberry bushes, and 100 feet of Muscadine grape vines. In addition, we harvest approximately 3 acres of blueberry bushes on Jody's parents "Across the Creek" farm.

Finally, we maintain 40 acres of the farm in uncut, forested land, working with the NC Forest Service as a Forest Stewardship Farm to increase the diversity and populations of wildlife species, protect the water quality of the three streams that originate on or pass through the farm, and engage in soil conservation activities.

Licensed Commercial Kitchen/Certified Bakery

At our Bakery in Elkin we produce baked goods such as cakes, cookies, scones, breads, muffins, tarts, pies, and other baked goods. We also make jams, relishes, sauces, spreads, salads, syrups, chutneys, pickles, salsa, and other “canned” items.

We use our free range chicken eggs, pesticide and chemical free fruits and vegetables, and natural, unpasteurized raw honey in our baked goods and canned products.

The Barking Coyote Coffee Shop and Farm Store

In 2016, as an outgrowth of our participation in farmers markets and thanks to Hugh Chatham Hospital and UnderdownBall Reality, we were afforded the opportunity to have a permanent location and opened up as a store front, something we have always aspired to do.

Located in the old BB&T drive-through bank at 202 West Main Street in Elkin, The Barking Coyote Coffee Shop and Farm Store opens bright and early at 7 am with quality coffee (USDA Organic/Fair Trade Certified coffee from Red Rooster Coffee – “Coffee with a Conscious” https://redroostercoffeeroaster.com/), and “just out of the oven” scones and the “baker’s choice” breakfast baked goods of the day from the Barking Coyote Kitchen and Bakery. Also available are hot chocolate, gourmet tea, and other drink selections.

You will find healthy lunch, dinner, and tasty desert options as well, along with farm fresh, free range chicken eggs, honey, salsas, deli selections, and occasional farm produce such as fresh blueberries when in season.

The Barking Coyote is also available for placing special orders for individuals and family/small group occasions.

Come check us out, grab your favorite Coyote treat and drink, and relax in our outdoor seating and garden area while enjoying the sights and sounds of the best of small town America that is Elkin.
