The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine is a cancer treatment, research and education institution with four locations in the St. Louis area. Siteman is the only cancer center in Missouri and within 240 miles of St. Louis to be designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Siteman is also the only area member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a nonprofit alliance of 27 cancer centers dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of cancer care.In 2015, Siteman: Received the highest rating possible - exceptional - by the NCI for cancer research. At Siteman's review leading to the rating, researchers presented their findings in genomics, cancer imaging, cancer prevention and disparities, and the use of the body's immune system to fight cancer.Was named a top 15 U.S. cancer center by U.S. News & World Report. The recognition is part of the overall ranking of its parent institutions, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University, which together are No. 10 on the news magazine’s 2015-16 “Best Hospitals” list. Washington University School of Medicine also is ranked No. 6 on the U.S. News & World Report "Best Medical Schools: Research" list. In 2014, Siteman treated nearly 9,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients and every year provides continuing care to about 40,000 people, making it one of the largest cancer centers in the United States.
