What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is a beautiful Brazilian art. It combines martial art, dance, music, acrobatics, rhythm, balance and dexterity. These elements together form a magical game of respect, rhythm and ritual.

The History of Capoeira

Capoeira comes from Brazil, with its roots in Africa. It was created during the colonial period in Brazil, by African slaves who were brought to Brazil from Western Africa (modern day Angola, for example) to work on plantations. In the beginning, capoeira was a legitimate fight. But slave owners saw the danger in allowing their slaves to practice self-defense, since they could use it against their owners as a tool for rebellion and freedom. So capoeira was outlawed.

Instead of allowing themselves to be demoralized and allowing capoeira to die, the shrewd slaves hid the fight within a dance, and transformed it so that they could continue to practice it without others recognizing it as a fight.

As in the past, capoeira today is a limitless tool for liberation and freedom, but today it is a freedom of mind—liberation from prejudices, judgment, and our own fears. Capoeira is an excellent way to challenge yourself, push your own limits and overcome your fears. In capoeira class, you’ll meet people from many backgrounds, of all ages, and experience personal growth.

What Professor Mosquito says about capoeira

“I’ve been training in capoeira for 25 years. One of the most important things that this amazing art of capoeira has taught me is that it is okay to fall in life, because you can always pick yourself up and start again.”

Capoeira for Kids

Capoeira is great for physical conditioning and personal growth for both adults and children alike. For children it is especially beneficial because it helps them rapidly develop cognitive and motor skills, and sharpen their coordination, flexibility, and dexterity. Capoeira classes also teach the values of respect, leadership, and sharing. Children can also develop their concentration through learning music, dance, history and culture—all important parts of capoeira. Help your child by giving them the opportunity to take part in this amazing art, and one of the most efficient sports in the world.
