Founded in 2014, 1877 Society is a not-so-secret group of young professionals who have one thing in common: a passion for Omaha’s public libraries. All members are associated with the Omaha Public Library Foundation, which exists to raise funds and advocate for Omaha Public Library, its programs, patrons, services, and staff.
For the fourth consecutive year, 1877 Society invited Omaha-area writers in their forties and younger to submit unpublished prose and poetry for its annual writing contest.
This year’s winners were Amy O’Reilly, for her poem “We Bought This House For The Natural Light,” and Ryn Baginski, for her short story “The Magician and the Sun.” Each received a $500 cash prize from the Omaha Public Library Foundation.
The winners were announced October 3, during the monthly Literary Pub Quiz at Pageturners Lounge.
Personal essays and short stories under 5,000 words were submitted in the prose category. Writers could also submit one single-spaced poem of under three pages in the poetry category. Entrants were permitted to submit in both categories.
“My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!” You guessed it: this year's Animus title is "The Princess Bride." Join us at Aksarben Cinema on Thursday, October 25! Event proceeds will support your Omaha Public Library.
Join us Wednesday at Pageturners Lounge when we announce the winners of the annual 1877 Society Writing Contest. Come for the pub quiz; stay for the witty banter and special category devoted to Omaha Public Library.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Omaha Public Library Foundation will host its annual fundraiser featuring a celebrated author. Between the Lines with Amy Thielen will take place on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at the Institute for the Culinary Arts on the Metro Community College Fort Omaha Campus. Clayton Chapman of The Grey Plume will serve as honorary chair. Event proceeds from Between the Lines with Amy Thielen will support Omaha Public Library programs and services.
