錦鯉最早出現在中國西晉時期的記載。到了17世紀，錦鯉開始在日本的新潟縣地區有規模的飼養。在水稻田內工作的農民發現有些鯉魚有著較光亮的色彩，於是捕捉它們回家飼養（而通常這種具有亮麗色彩的魚較容易被發現而被鳥類或其他捕食者吃掉）。許多的錦鯉色彩模式建立於19世紀，如著名的紅白kohaku，但直到1914年當新潟錦鯉在東京展出並有一些作為禮物贈送給皇太子（後來的昭和天皇）後，外部世界才對錦鯉有所了解。之後，對錦鯉的飼養由日本傳播到了世界各地。錦鯉現在可以在許多寵物商店買到。錦鯉魚最早原產於中國及東亞一帶，但於日本被大量利用交配技術繁殖改良。
