A White Hat describes one who is admirable and honourable, a virtuous hero if you like. The concept of white hat dates back to the good old days of black and white westerns or cowboy movies the villain archetypically wore a black hat and the hero would don a white hat. The white hat signifies someone who is playing the role of a good guy.
In public relations, we are the good guys and wear the white hat on behalf of our clients. This carries over to our interactions with our client's clients, the media and each other.
It is a symbol of justice and fighting the good fight so we're "The Justice League" of PR.
Beyond the basic principles of client relations – trust, honesty, professionalism and dedication to delivering results – we serve as a moral compass for our clients navigating a challenging media or customer landscape. This is when we wear the white hat for our clients. Whether helping them through a crisis comms situation, shaping their key messages or launching them in a new market, we are extensions of our clients and their partners.
