Description

Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-operation (MGICC)

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-operation (MGICC) was set up under the bilateral Cultural Exchange Programme of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and the Government of India in 1997. Administered by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) under the overall charge of the High Commission of India, the Institute started operations from its temporary premises at Bungalow 22105, Old Southern Main Road, Frederick Settlement, Caroni, having moved from that location in 2012 we are now located at 3rd Floor, Plaza De Montrose, 49 Main Road, Chaguanas

Our primary objective to develop better understanding and goodwill among the people of Trinidad and Tobago and India, the Institute endeavours to promote bilateral cultural co-operation between the two countries in the field of art and culture at both Government and NGO levels, through its cultural and teaching activities by India-based teachers in Indian classical Music and Dance.

The Institute maintains close and collaborative relationship with the University of the West Indies, through its two Chairs set up for teaching of Hindi and another on Cinema Study, which is schedule to start soon with the support of ICCR. The MGICC in collaboration with the University of the West Indies also hosts the Annual Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Lecture, where eminent personalities from India and Trinidad and Tobago are invited to deliver the feature address.

Apart from imparting training to the students in music and dance at the MGICC and its Outreach Centres, the teachers of the Institute actively participate in the programmes organized by the local cultural, educational and religious organizations with a view to promote greater awareness of India’s composite cultural heritage. The Institute is also regularly organizing variety of cultural events like exhibitions, music and dance programmes, painting competitions, Kavi Sammelan, lectures, workshops, film shows etc., both independently and in collaboration with local cultural organizations. The MGICC also offers Scholarships under ICCR’s General Cultural Scholarship Scheme (GCSS). It has recently clubbed ICCR’s alumni with the ITEC and formed an India Alumni Association under the aegis of the High Commission of India.
