The Rumeli Fortress, built on the narrowest of the two sides of the Bosphorus, lies between the Baby and the Baltalımanı, directly opposite the Anatolian Fortress. The original plan of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, which was built just opposite the Anatolian Fortress to completely control the passage of the Bosphorus during the preparations for the conquest of Istanbul, was drawn by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. The documents indicate that in the construction of the fort, more than two thousand craftsmen and two thousand workers work nightly and that the fortune is completed in four months.
With the conquest of Istanbul on May 29, 1453, both the Anatolian and the Rumeliian fortresses had largely ended. After the conquest, the criminal was punished by the janissaries and the foreign embassy members who entered the war with the Ottoman were used as detention places. Hisar, restored in 1918, was completely revised in 1953 and the area where only the minaret left the minaret was transformed into open air theater. Rumeli Hisarı, which draws attention immediately among the most impressive buildings of the Bosphorus, today hosts many cultural-art activities such as concerts and theater as well as serving as a museumresponse / report this review -

Fantastic place, well worth a visit. Since it is further away from all the other locations of historical importance in Istanbul, many tourists give this location a miss.Those who choose to come here will not be disappointed because it feels empty and pretty much yours for the day. Please know that while you are free to walk around the gardens and walk up some of the stairs to a higher vantage point, you are not allowed inside or on top if any of the remaining towers. Still the feel of the place is amazing and you can spend some time here walking around and looking at the view.

Low-key historic spot by the beautiful Bosphorus. Bring your museum card here for free entry, and enjoy climbing through the fortress and reliving the 15th century relics of Constantinople. The fortress was built as the city was preparing for attacks from the Ottomans. After over half a century, the fortress is still well-maintained. Aside from its rich history, this spot is peaceful and serene. Bring a book to read, and enjoy the views of the glimmering Bosphorus.

Rumeli Castle (Rumeli Hisarı) is an Ottoman fortress dating to 1452. It was built by Ottoman sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror) in preparation of the conquest of Constantinople. The castle is situated on the shore of the Bosphorus Strait at its narrowest point with approximately 660 meters. It is just opposite of Anadolu Castle (Anadolu Hisarı) that is another Ottoman castle built in 1394 by Bayezid I. Both Anadolu Castle and Rumeli Castle were built by Ottoman sultans in order to prevent military and economic aid to the Byzantine Empire coming from the north, Black Sea. Thus, Bosphorus strait connects Black Sea with Marmara Sea.

Rumeli Hisari (Rumeli Castle) is one of the Castles built by Ottomans for preparations to conquer Istanbul in 15th century. It looks stunning from the Bosphorus line.
The other side of bosphorus hosts the other castle as Anadolu hisari (Anatolian Castle)
These structures were built to control ships and military traffic on bosphorus in time.
Castle is still in good condition but surrounding park is in poor conditions.response / report this review -

Quite a distance to travel, depending on where your staying in Istanbul, is it worth a visit? I think so, the views of the phosphorous and other land marks are stunning. Unfortunately the main attractions of the forte, were closed for restoration so we didn't get to climb the walls or any other part of the forte, which was a real shame.

If you live castles with high winding stairs. You'll love this Fortress. The views of the Bosphorus are awe-inspiring.
Unfortunately most of the winding staircases and ramparts are closed due to Health and Safety. I hope they put fences up before my next visit.response / report this review -

Возможно посещение только "двора", нет внутренних помещений и нельзя подняться на стены. Тем не менее, нам очень понравилось. На территории живут ласковые и ручные котики, которые с радостью составят вам компанию

Almost all parts (upstairs to view Bosphorus, Towers) was closed for visitors. Supposedly for restoration, but dis not see any construction. Just barricades to prevent access. Was not warned by ticket office about this. Felt cheated. Else are not much to see.

Beautiful historic castle on the Bosphorus. only the gardens are open as of August 2017, but still very much worth a visit. nice views, cats and shadowy stairs among the trees.

Stunning views. Included as part of the 5 day museum pass. A very enjoyable hour spent exploring the gardens, lovely restaurants to choose from with great views of the Bosphorus nearby. Well worth the trip out

It is truly a magnificent structure and a must visit site of Istanbul, but IMO it is poorly managed. All the other reviewers must have visited somewhere else as I was a bit disappointed and underwhelmed with my experience. Initially the gate security man treated us like terrorists and went through my packpack and wife's handbag, yet let others pass by without checking. You are not allowed access to ANY of the towers or walls and your views are obscured by unmaintained and scrappy gardens. The grassed areas are also overgrown. The cistern beneath the mosque is closed to the public. It could easily be made better. Maybe they could utilise some of the dozen "security" personnel who are just lolling around playing on their phones and have them doing useful work. There is one info board, but it could easily show more history.

If you are in Istanbul, you should not miss the chance to observe the Asian and European sides so closely. The sea, the ships, the bridges You should have your cameras with you to take beautiful photos. You can visit the Rumelihisari Museum to learn more about the history of the city and the castle. Do not forget to drink a cup of Turkish tea or coffee with the magnificent view.

For a real visit, be prepared, there are too much steps to climb. It might be the first landmark of Otoman empire in Istanbul's european side.

Like the history of Rumelihisari. We arrived here early in the morning so we need to wait. Worth it if you know the history. The view from the top was very nice to me.
