Description

The Nation is a monthly magazine that specializes in socio-political commentary and analysis and blends this with breaking news stories from time to time to give a different perspective on the dynamics of Swaziland’s socio-political order from the mainstream media. We have become a must-read for politicians, executives, analysts and ordinary citizens who seek to engage in a broader understanding of the issues that affect their daily lives.

We continue to explore new ideas on how we can practice journalism in a better and more professional manner. We believe that ours is a profession that is not stagnant in an environment where new readers are still to be found and the existing ones seek a different and more incisive understanding of the issues affecting them.

UNESWA SO BROKE, IT’S BEEN REDUCED TO A FARCE

The University of eSwatini, once the pride of the country’s education system, has collapsed. Under-funding and abuse of the few financial resources it has had have been the cause of the mess. Government has refused to fund the university adequately in the last ten years and the results are now showing. Once revered as the mecca of premier education institutions in the region, it has collapsed to the point where it is starting to look like a farce Get the latest copy of The Nation magazine to read this and more…

IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES, LET’S FOLLOW THE RULES AND DO EVERYTHING TO STAY HEALTHY

In these trying times of the outbreak of Covid-19, let us try to do everything to stay healthy by doing everything to keep our bodies in good shape. Exercise is a key component of staving the virus away. Eating healthy food is just as important. The banning of social habits such as drinking alcohol and smoking was necessary as part of the plan to slow down the spread of the virus. For those who are still at home, there is much one can do to keep busy in order not suffer the fatigue of the lockdown whilst staying healthy Get a copy of The Nation magazine to read this and more…

WORKERS THE BIGGEST CASUALITIES IN THE POST CORONAVIRUS PERIOD

It is common cause that the world will never be the same in the post COVID-19 era. Given that businesses have taken a huge knock because of the lockdowns around the world, unemployment is expected to sore. Workers in the developing countries are expected to suffer the most in the aftermath of COVID-19. In fully developed countries, there are insurance benefits that are for workers to cushion the effect of the disruption of their lives in the near future. OUR COURTS MUST RESPECT OUR CUSTOMARY LAW

When the Supreme Court ruled that Victor Shabangu, whose funeral was delayed for close to two years because of a family dispute, be buried by his father, it violated his rights to his dignity. Shabangu had built himself a home at Ngculwini. Our customary law says a man is buried at his homestead as an autonomous human being. However, the court, ignoring SiSwati Law and Custom, invoked what it termed the common law claiming it had sought a fair and just resolution to the matter Get a copy of The Nation magazine to read this and more…

WE REALLY NEED TO STEP UP THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION

Corruption remains the biggest threat to this country’s economic future. It is most unfortunate that the scourge has been allowed to fester to such an extent that it has become part of our culture. There are no corruption free countries in the world, but there is a lot we can learn from Malaysia which has made a lot of progress in dealing with the problem Get a copy of The Nation to rad this and more…

    IS THE COVID-19 VIRUS AIRBORNE?

Covid-19 is not going anywhere anytime soon. That is what the experts are saying. King Mswati III has only addressed the nation once about this pandemic. Otherwise, the monarch has chosen to isolate himself from his people. He made his first and only public appearance last month in May to address issues pertaining to the corona virus and warned us that this virus is airborne, contrary to expert opinion. He then told us to use umhlonyane to cleanse ourselves and our surrounding spaces of the disease Get a copy of The Nation to read this and more…

HOW EMASWATI RALLIED TO BUILD A STADIUM FOR INDEPENDENCE

In the run up to independence on September 6, 1968 eSwatini, previously known as Swaziland until it was renamed by a defunct decree on April 19, 2018, the authorities realised that there was no venue for the upcoming historic celebrations. Added to that problem was also the realisation that even the monarch, King Sobhuza II, did not have a modern palace big enough to entertain international guests who would be invited for the occasion. There were 52 countries invited for the big day. Get a copy of The Nation magazine to read this and more...

THE CHURCH HAS A HUGE ROLE TO PLAY IN CONTAINING THIS COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The eruption of the Covid-19 virus has created unprecedented problems for the church. Social distancing is a new phenomenon that threatens everything that the church stands for. The laying of hands is integral to healing in Christianity as exemplified by examples of Christ’s healing powers. It is unfortunate that in the many committees created to help contain the virus, priests have not been selected despite the fact that they are more in touch with the grassroots than political leaders Get a copy of The Nation magazine to read this and more...

CAN A JUDGE OF VIRTUE, CALLED TO ‘PRIESTHOOD’ RISE IN OUR JUDICIARY

Justice Oagile Dingake from Botswana epitomises everything a good judge should be. The quintessential jurist, Dingake says a judge is to be compared to priesthood in his vocation because he brings relief to the lives of those who feel damned. We need such judges in our courts, men and women who water our legal system with the virtues of constitutionalism and the rule of law. Unfortunately, the structures of our judicial system as it stands cannot do that First, the manner of the judges appointment is problematic and deeply concerning. COVID-19 HAS CHANGED THE WAY WE KNOW LIFE

The world, as we know it, has changed. This pandemic has made us appreciate the things we have always taken for granted, such as the fact that each day is a miracle. We had become accustomed to living our lives as if we are in control. This is a wake-up call that we really aren’t. This outbreak has also made us appreciate the gift of family a little bit more; being together in the same space for longer than usual has given us an oppo...rtunity to get to know each other better. My heart goes out to those who do not have a family support structures as it means loneliness which can easily lead to depression. Get a copy of the April edition to read this and more…
