Description

Rwanda has a rich, unique, cultural history beginning in the ancient times with archaeological excavations that have revealed evidence from hunter gatherers in the late Stone Age to Iron Age settlers producing dimpled pottery and iron tools. This cultural richness is envisaged in diversity of crafts, dance, and strong traditions that offer unique opportunities that draws inspiration from tradition as well as modernity, well preserved through continued creativity categorically visible in various museums, memorial and historical sites across the country.

It is evident that, Rwanda lacks large industrial and other manufacturing experiences; however, this does not negate the rich and diversified cultural heritage that is most probable an important resource available. The rich and diverse indigenous Rwandan/African culture has hardly been seen as a potential tourism resource that we need to live with, and cleanse it so that, it does not poison tourism development. And yet, it is well established that archaeological sites and museums can act as the mainspring of tourist developments with economic benefits.

Despite Rwanda’s position as an emerging tourist destination, a lot of attention has been placed on the development of limited tourism products namely; wild life tourism. Rwanda’s culture in terms of lifestyles, the history, the art, architecture, religions and other elements need to be tapped as backup for our country’s heritage to promote cultural tourism.
The movement of persons to these cultural attractions away from their normal place of residence brings in experiences and factual information that satisfy their cultural needs. This is the travelers dream, they wish to see new cultures, meet new people and experience new adventures. For it is an on going quest for learning and understanding.
Cultural activities such as museums and heritage sites need protection. The time is not tomorrow, not next year, it is now. This is the legacy of our past, what we live with it today and what we pass on onto the future. The next generation is counting on our generation.
