Sukaina Adibi, an awardee of the SEA Teacher Batch 6 Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia from the University of Bengkulu Indonesia.
A socialization about her research on Indicator of Silver Nanoparticle was presented before 100 students of Saint Louis University in the Philippines last August 11, 2018, at the Perfecto AVR of Saint Louis University.
On September 2018, Sukaina will be competing in the Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa (PKM) or the Students Creativity Program in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. PKM is a competition under the Ministry of Technology and Research.
The developments in time and industrial activities currently continue to increase causing problems in the aquatic environment. One of the wastes originating from industrial activities and often pollutes the aquatic environment are heavy metals. One type of heavy metal with high toxicity is mercury (Hg). There are several methods that can be used to determine the concentration of Hg metal in environmental samples, including the use of the Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) Method and the Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). However, the price of analytical tools such as ICP-MS and AAS are relatively expensive, therefore an affordable alternative analysis is needed – the Indicator Paper of Silver Nanoparticle.
Sukaina did a socialization and presentation about this issue in the Philippines because the country has a lot of aquatic environments where this tool is suitable. “The function of the Indicator Paper of Silver Nanoparticle is to detect mercury in an aquatic environment and skin care products. This tool is very useful because there are many people in the Philippines who have a job in the traditional mining of gold wherein this job some of the workers use mercury to separate gold.”. Additionally, nowadays, there are many situations where mercury is abused especially in the production of cream. To minimize this problem and avoid people from the poisoning and disease of mercury, Sukiana presented how important knowledge about mercury is, the negative impact of mercury, and how to protect ourselves from mercury and how to detect mercury using the indicator paper of silver nanoparticle.
